Meaning: Free man; farmer
Alternate spellings: Carolyne, Karolyne, Karoline, Carolina, Carolyn
Caroline and Carly are close cousins. Caroline stems from the French Charles, while Carly stems from German Carl, but both mean “free man.” Caroline Kennedy, JFK’s daughter, lends her strong mind and successful career to the name; parents might find some of her strength in their own “Sweet Caroline.”
Popular among the wealthy since the 1600s, Caroline was in the top 100 in the 1880s, then dropped out of popularity. It’s come back to the top 100 only recently. Try Carolina for a change.
