Meaning: Barrel maker
Alternate spellings: Kooper, Coop
Cooper is an English occupational surname that was used for barrel makers. (If we named people now for what they do, it would be John Financial Consultant. Not nearly as catchy as Cooper.) Cooper was first on the U.S. charts in the 1880s, but then disappeared for one hundred years. It came back in 1982, but really came into vogue in the early 2000s. Look for Cooper to maintain its popularity – it sounds friendly and fresh, which should continue to appeal to parents. The cool nickname Coop has charm, too.
