Meaning: God has given me strength; man of God
Alternate spellings: Gabriela, Gabrielle, Gabby, Gaby
Gabrielle’s getting the -ella treatment, dropping its super-feminine -elle ending and becoming pretty, popular Gabriella. The nineties were Gabrielle’s decade. On the charts since 1957, it flew in popularity at the end of the century, hitting the top 100 in 1990 and peaking at #46 in 1999. Gabriella didn’t even hit the charts for the first time until 1974, but it’s shooting up the list, passing Gabrielle on her way down in 2006. So why the switch? Vanessa Hudgens might be the answer -her character Gabriella Montez from High School Musical may have pushed the name to its current heights, but the movie, released in 2006, can’t explain the name’s original boost. We think the boost is linked to the current popularity of the boy’s version, Gabriel.
