Originally Gage was an English surname that referred to the person’s profession – an assayer or land measurer. It means “measure,” and even now it is synonymous with the word “gauge.”
As a first name, Gage landed on the list of popular names in 1989 at #755. That same year a popular movie was released with a character named Gage. (See #1.) Even though the character met an untimely end, the next year the name Gage went to #359. It has slowly gotten more popular since then.
