Meaning: Pleasant meadow
Alternate spellings: Marlea, Marleigh, Marlee, Marlie
Marley is an English surname that meant “pleasant meadow” until Bob Marley came along and switched it to “pleasant mellow.” Marley’s new trappings include peace-loving, love-worshipping, and some strong political views. And for dog lovers, the 2005 book (and subsequent 2008 movie) Marley & Me changed the name’s image again…to a big, goofy, bad-mannered dog. Whatever meaning you attach to the name, it’s incredibly popular these days. It appeared on the girls’ chart in 1994, and showed up on the boys’ chart in 2008. Maybe this unisex pair, like so few others, will get along in peace.
