Baby Names:

Morgan

Meaning: Circling sea, bright

Origin: Welsh

Alternate spellings: Morgin

Morgan is traditionally a boy’s name that comes from the Welsh name Morcant (in Celtic cant means “circle” or “completion” – maybe a good name if your next child will be the one to complete the family?). It’s virtually nickname-free (Morg doesn’t sound so good, right?), so keep that in mind. It’s also undergone something of a gender realignment: it’s been a moderately popular boy’s name since 1880, but in the late 1970s, parents started using the name for their daughters. It made its way to the top 100 for girls in 1987 – higher than it’s ever been on the boys’ chart – and the boys never really recovered, despite Morgan Freeman’s impressive acting career. All the Morgans on eighties big-haired soap operas are probably responsible for that.
