Baby Squared

Please, let it be food poisoning.

Has anyone ever wished for food poisoning before? (For themselves, I mean.) Of course, I'd rather not feel sick at all. But I'm really hoping the reason I threw up last night and felt nauseated and weak all day today was that I ate something a bit "off" yesterday. Perhaps the leftover chicken I had for dinner. Because if it's a virus, that means chances are Elsa and Clio are going to get it, too, and I can't deal with any more sick babies. They just got over colds. Then before that it was a stomach virus. Colds before that. And more colds. They don't even go to daycare, for God's sake!

As for me, I have been sick more times in the past six months of my life than I think I've been in the previous six years. Several colds, a stomach virus and a case of (I hope!) food poisoning. Oh yeah, and a month-long bout of clinical depression which still hasn't entirely cleared up. Grrr. What gives? I've heard a lot of people comment that this has been a particularly bad year for illnesses, but I feel like people say that every year. Does having children weaken your immune system? It's not like I'm sleep deprived. I eat well, I drink a lot of water, I wash my hands. Don't these viruses realize I'm trying take care of two toddlers, hold down a job, and write the great American novel, among other things? Could they show just a teensy little bit of mercy?

In other, healthier news, on Saturday, at the invitation of BabyMama (wife of Babby Daddy), we joined her and Josie and apparently every child under seven in the city of Arlington, Massachusetts plus their parents at an Indoor Beach Party for little ones in a school gym. And let me tell you, that Josie sure is a bitch. (JUST KIDDING!!!)

Seriously, we had a great time. There were beach balls and inner tubes for kids to play with, cardboard boxes and containers for them to make "Recycled castles" with, wading pools full of toys and a couple of "sandboxes" with rice for sand. There was pizza and ice cream and donut holes (three of the four junk food groups), Beach Boy tunes, and general chaos. Outside it poured rain, but inside it was surf city, man.

This season it's all about the lei-as-choker

Adding to that genuine "real beach" feel, was the fact that a couple of times I no idea where one or both of my children were. Keeping tabs on both of them at once wasn't easy, especially when Alastair ducked out for a few minutes to run an errand. But it was a pretty friendly crowd. And, unlike at the real beach, there was no ocean for the girls to wander haplessly into. Mostly they just went toddling up to various groups of parents and kids and stared longingly at their food. Here's Elsa in action:

I was amazed, actually, at how independent and adventurous all three girls were -- Josie, Elsa, and Clio. They were happy to walk around and explore, braving belligerent three year-olds, barrelling six-year-olds and lots of distracted adults. Clio stuck a little closer to us, but struck out on her own a few times. She also had some inner tube adventures:

As did Elsa...here seen making her new "uh oh" face. And hanging on to a souvenir from the Recyled Castle-making area. (You venture out in the driving rain to the next town over for something fun and different, and what do they do? They play with tupperware. Just like at home.)

So, that was our day at the beach. I guess with so many people crammed into one space, tossing around baby-slobber-infested beach balls and things, it's not terribly unlikely that I could have picked up some kind of virus. But until somebody small starts puking, I'm going to hold onto hope that it was salmonella, e.coli, anything -- just not another something we can all catch!

I TOTALLY know what you are talking about! I remember puking on Christmas Eve, and praying that it wasn't something my daughter (whose name is Jane, by the way!) could catch. She is 7 months old and has had a cold since the beginning of December, I swear! Plus my husband and I have had chronic colds as well. I CANNOT WAIT for spring to get here, and am praying that the end of cold season is upon us! Hope you feel better (and I hope it's food poisoning!).

I hope you're feeling better today, Jane! I have to give you credit for being sane enough to actually take pictures of the chaos, since I didn't do that with my *one* daughter. Josie and I are fine, so if it's food poisoning you can rest assured it wasn't any of the ice cream, donuts or pizza we stuffed our faces with...

I hear you on the whole being sick so often thing. I too have 13 month old twins and I have never been sick as much as I've been in the past year. But for me I do think it has a lot to do with sleep deprivation. Your immune system just goes down the tubes. They have been "sleeping through the night" forever... except for when they don't. Like last night, I was up, oh, at least 5 times after going to bed  very smug at the thought of getting an extra hours' sleep.... 'cos they DONT KNOW the clock changed. HAH. They know. They know everything. And I firmly believe that they conspire at night before bed as to who's gonna wake Momma up tonight. I've been taking Ester C every morning for a couple of months and touch wood it does seem to have fortified my body somewhat.

I prayed it was food poisoning in January when I had some nasty stomach thing.  I'm still not sure what it was, but my daughter and wife never caught it.  I hope that your husband and girls will be as lucky!

I had a puking episode in November and was SO HOPING it was food poisoning.  It was looking good since no one else in my household got sick for about a week after I had had it, but then S. suddenly fell ill, and, in short order, so did B. and both babysitters.  I hope you have better luck.

Some of my pals swear by Kombucha - it's like $3.59 a bottle, but I've started drinking it in the hopes of boosting my immune system.  Really, I'm kind of a sucker.

I've definitely been there, praying that the one sicko in the family has something that is not communicable. The kiddos have been sick more of the time than not this winter, and the grown ups have certainly been sick more than before in our lives. In our case, I know it's exposure to daycare germs, sleep deprivation, and increased stress.

Love the giant beach party. We could use some beach in this gray March. I loved seeing how big and kid like your girls are looking, not really like babies anymore!

Hope you feel better soon! My son is in daycare and O.M.G. that little bastige is sick more often than not. He's cheerful about it and tolerates it, but we have tubes in ears, nebulizer, and stock in Cipro anyway. Oddly, my husband is sick more than I am. I say "oddly" because he is a fanatical handwasher, 6 yrs younger, and in better shape. I, however, am a slackass about handwashing, and tired all the time, but I rarely get sick. Hang in there, it's just the luck of the draw.

I actually haven't been sick at all this winter and I was just thinking how WEIRD that is. Of course, my social circle is pretty severely limited, so that could be it.

But you know what constantly amazes me? Every time I see Elsa it's like she's a brand new baby. Like, she always looks different even if she's only a week older. But Clio? Looks EXACTLY the same, just bigger. She's going to have her daddy's babyface her entire life, I think. And then we'll bond over no one believing that we're the ages we totally are. Once she gets old enough to talk. And understand what the heck that means.
