The Problem with Pictures

I know how much y'all love the cute pics of the girls. And I try to deliver as often as possible. The thing is, a little situation has developed. See, we've occasionally let the girls look at the back of the digital camera to see the pictures of themselves. So now, every time the camera comes out, Clio wants to see the babies.(Babies! Babies!) Which makes taking her picture decidedly challenging. Observe:

Mom quickly snaps a pic of Clio in her new chair, but she's already on her way over...

She sees the camera. "Babies! Babies!"

"Babiiiiiieeees!!!"

This happens pretty much every time I try to take Clio's picture. As a result, I have an absurd number of pictures of Clio charging toward the camera. (And an imbalance of pictures of Elsa just playing or smiling or otherwise not grabbing the camera out of my hands.) Sometimes if I'm stealthy, I can manage a pic of the two of them together...

Yes! Cute shot of chubby twin toddler legs!  Now, maybe if I can get them both to turn around at the same time....

Too late. Clio's onto me.

"Babies! Babies!"

You see what I'm up against here?

Unfortunately, this fascination with the camera isn't one that can be easily solved, like the cell phone issue. For a while, the girls were snatching our cell phones (they can now, inconveniently, reach the kitchen counter and dining room table, where we often leave them), holding them up to their ears and saying "Oh? Oh?" and occasionally placing accidental calls. (Elsa managed to inadvertently call her grandmother once, which I thought was fairly impressive.) I found an old, non-working cell-phone to let them play with, but it has since disappeared under some piece of furniture. And they didn't like it that much anyway -- no beeps, no pictures.

So the other day I bought a toy cell phone for them. It was a hit. (And there was hitting, too, seeing as I was foolhardy enough to buy only one of them. But now that the thrill has worn off, the girls are doing a better job of sharing.) Sadly, there's no such thing as a toy digital camera that I'm aware of, and there's almost definitely not one featuring pictures of babies. Elsa and Clio, specifically. (Hm...writing this is conjuring up a vague childhood memory of a Fisher Price toy camera I had as a kid...you could look into the viewfinder and push the button and see pictures of zoo animals...wow. I haven't thought about that thing in years...)

Oh, and were you admiring those cute new chairs? Well. Let me tell you. They're made by a certain upscale home goods purveyor we'll call, oh, Ceramicshack Children. But they're a bit pricey, especially if you're going to buy two. This thrifty mama, however, knows the way to Ebay, and scored the pair of them--brand new--for just a little more than the price of one if I'd ordered them directly from the Ceramicshack. And the gals lurrrrve them.

So, on that very consumerist, all-American note....Happy Independence Day, readers! Here's to life, liberty and the pursuit of bargains. Huzzah!

Love and am jealous of the new chairs. We have similar issues with the camera. Also, my computer, because sometimes I let them watch little videos of themselves, so now I can't turn on my computer without cries of "more bideo, more bideo."

Here's a link for a children's digital camera...a bit pricey but I know a few people who have one and say they're a hit.

I remember reading an interesting suggestion regarding kids fascinated with digital cameras: put a want ad on Craigslist asking for a really old or broken-but-semi-functional camera. Especially if you offer to pick it up, I'm sure you'll be able to get one for cheap / free.

the old camera suggestion is a good one but could still be pricey and i don't know if mine would be fooled. it's still not my camera. the trick is to find a camera that looks like yours. mine are not suckers for the bright yellow giant plastic camera as a decoy for my sleek small metallic one that has, oh yeah, pictures of them inside. we had the cell phone fascination too so i also got them the toy cell phones. when i got a new phone (silver to black) i had to get them new black toy cell phones too. copy cats.

Our son turned 2 on June 29, so I remember not so long ago (and still, to an extent)the fascination with gadgets. He once called the Pelican Club in New Orleans when I foolishly passed the cell phone to him while I was driving. We don't live in New Orleans, the place was recommended (pre-Katrina) by a friend since I was speaking at a conference there. So the call wasn't the cheapest. I could hear a delighted hostess shouting, "Hello?....Hello?....Hello, there sweet baby! How are you?", as my son cooed and gurgled and said something like "Hey.."

First of all, your girls are so cute it's ridiculous. Nearly all photos of my two year old are also of her charging at the camera..."I see it"...and as for the phone fascination, try getting a callback from 911 after your daughter makes an abandoned call. cops are on the way to your house to make sure all's well. YIKES.

Michael has a similar chair from Target, and he also loves it!  He also has the same cell phone/camera habits.  Now that you mention it, I should go get him a fake cell phone, though I doubt it will be as fun as the real one.

oooh! I did the same thing and now I have very similar shots of Burke :) He *loves* seeing himself (and anyone else for that matter) in the camera.

Jealous of the chairs (and the bargain!) Kudos to you. :)

Betty -- ha! I just love the word "y'all" even though it is in no way part of my cultural or linguistic heritage. It sounds so friendly and inclusive, you know? And I like the clarity of it -- I'm not talking to one person, I'm talking to all of y'all!

Thank you for reporting on the Ceramic Shack chairs, I was going to ask.  I've already decided that Little Man is getting his own lounger for Christmas (I know, I plan early) and I was considering Ceramic Shack.  Will have to consult Ebay.

hey we have those chairs! Same color too.

For several weeks we only had one, because we had a gift certificate to Pottery Bitch and didn't know what else to do with it. That's when the biting started in earnest, over the one chair... so we shelled it out for a 2nd chair.

Clio's sportin' some downright girly hair! So cute - I can't wait to see them again.

I photograph kids quite often, and I've switched to digital in the last couple years, so I know about this problem!

My solution: turn off the picture review display. This will be somewhere in the options menu. That way the photo won't come up on the back of the screen. You might want to tell the girls that it's "broken" (what is parenting without white lies? ;) )And they'll give up looking at the photos before too long.

The reason this bothered me is I'd have the kids wanting to be on the wrong side of the camera! Definitely no good for photos. Maybe let them come see the photos once you get them onto the computer?

I love how fasinated kids are with cameras.  I have seen a few toy digital cameras around - the kind where you click the button and the "photo" on the "viewscreen" clicks around to a cute cartoon picture.  I found children were most amused when they took a photo of me and the picture on the back was a dog.  Lots of laughter.  And pointing fingers.  Good times!

Alternatively you could buy a cheap plastic camera or toy camera and stick a photo on the back?  It would probably get picked off fast, but you could just keep replacing the photo with a new one?  Of course, that does require Clio and Elsa to get into the whole roleplay aspect of it!

The real kids digital cameras look very nifty!  It would be fasinating to see what they took pictures of. :)

(PS.  I have been reading your blog for a while, but I don't think I've commented before.  I'm not a parent but I'm a nursery nurse, working with 18m-4yos.  I really enjoy reading about your experiences with twins!)
