Baby Squared

The way you wear (my) hat...

As my posts over the past few months (like this one and this one) have indicated, this has been a challenging phase in our parenting adventure, with the girls becoming increasingly willful, demanding and prone to freak-outs. The terrible twos, times two.

This is still the case much of the time, but I also feel like in the past couple of weeks the girls have turned a corner in terms of their ability to keep themselves entertained. This is an especially good thing considering that it just keeps snowing and we are more or less housebound. Many of the girls' favorite activities these day are about mimicking adult activities: they love "washing" dishes in the sink, and "cooking" by playing with bowls and spoons; they also like to "fix" the baby gates with their little plastic wrenches and "unlock" various doors with our keys. Another extremely popular -- and adorable -- activity these days is playing dress-up, primarily in mommy and daddy's clothes and shoes. Observe:

Does Clio dare to mix Mom's retro dots with ultra-sleek stripes and velour? Oh yes she does.

The blind, groping arctic explorer look is back -  with a pink twist - and here to stay!

Dickensian street urchin meets hungry, modern-day toddler in this daring ensemble.

Sleepers and sunglasses: coming soon to a runway near you.

And finally, who wore Mom's Dansko clogs better?

Elsa strolls with stroller for that authentic "grown-up" look

Clio mixes slouchy, preppy-chic with a large, square sticker, for a look that's all her own.

Happy inauguration day, everyone. (I know for damned sure I'm happy, anyway!)

Yea, Obama!

One year for Christmas when my girls were younger and I was oh so very poor, I gave them a tub of dress-up clothes. I went to a bunch of yard sales and consignment stores and got hats, dresses, and even feather boas, for almost nothing. They played with all that stuff for years and even when they were older, they pieced Halloween costumes out of it. On those endless Winter days, we'd have fashion shows where my girls would put together ensembles and make a big production of coming out of their room in fedoras and bright pink tutu's. The embarrassing photo ops were endless.

Happy Inauguration Day!!!!

Your blog gets me excited for when my 2 baby girls are a bit older and can play dress up. My 4 y/o already tries her hats on them (they are 7 months) and they love it already.  Good times!

Sooo cute!  It's amazing how similar toddlers are.  Michael does the same thing.  My favorite is the sunglasses.  Who says they're just for summer or daytime?  Fashion is all about the unexpected.

Three things stood out for me in your post:

1.  We are also housebound, because it is so damn cold, but also because my twins are 22 months old and I have a 3-week old also who is nursing.  There is nowhere I can venture out by myself.  My twins have been entertaining themselves by hitting and torturing each other.  Any suggestions?

2.  We have the same gates.  Do yours stay in place?  Ours tend to dislodge if someone forcefully uses the foot pedal.

3.  What is it with Danskos?  The twins also love my clogs.

The girls are absolutely adorable!

My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER when I was a kid was a dress up tub populated entirely with random finds from the goodwill 50-cent bin.  Neon pink mumus and huge flowery hats and this lime-green formal number with a flouncy feather train were just a few of the treasures in that bin.  I highly recommend a goodwill trip to save your real clothes the inevitable beating that toddlers will inflict.

Kate and Emily repeatedly ask to wear "Daddy's shirt."  It's so freakin' cute, so I always indulge them.  DH is less than thrilled about this new foray into fashion, however, as many many t-shirts now have stretched out necks!

Amy -- our gates totally get dislodged or just loosened out of whack all the time. And they've taken big circles of paint off the walls. Very annoying on both counts! But we had no choice because we have moldings on the base of the walls, so the standard-size gates wouldn't fit.

As for housebound suggestions....if you read back a few posts, there was one where I bemoaned our lack of things to do and commenters had lots of great suggestions.

Sigh...I have tons of fancy dance costumes and Halloween costumes I saved up so that one day I could give them to my little girl for dress up play and oh how happy she would be....then I ended up with twin boys! haha So I am going to sell them all in our Spring Consignment Sale for our multiples club. That way at least some little girl out there will get joy out of them.

It was nice reading your post. I needed to know such kind of information to update myself. I work in my friend’s boutique of flower girl dresses and also help in the online promotion.

Your little girls are so, so cute!  I love the picture of the sunglasses.  You should dress them up in little princess costumes or flower girl dresses.  They would look adorable all dressed up.
