Band on the Diaper Run

Count your books

So, I've been learning about the Read for the Record campaign started by Jumpstart.  On October 2, everyone who is involved and cares about this (I do) will read the same book with their children (The book is Cordouroy, a favorite of ours)..and we'll break the world record.

And, this weekend, Magnolia and I are going to count the age-appropriate (4 and under) books we have.

I think everyone else should do the same and we can compare our numbers.

Then, we can all be astounded together that in economically depressed areas, children, on average, have 0-2 books.

I'd like to see what our (babble blog readers) average is.

We try so hard to read every night to our kids, even when we are cutting it close to show time.  Sometimes we read in her bed and other times we sit anywhere she wants to read.  We've also found that she sits down and eats better if we read her books. Lately I've been really into getting Mem Fox books from the library.  Her books can make adults cry, and Mags loves them too.

Anyway, as quoted by Jumpstart, "The home environment, specificaly the availability of reading material is a stronger predictor of later academic achievement than socioeconomic status."  And for us, I guess the home environment means on-the-road.

Count your books!

Also, maybe we can do a music nerd study later and count our vinyl records.

My two year old has about 60 books on his shelf right now, and this doesn't count the nearly four boxes of books in our attic from my childhood. We have just started going to the library more regularly...i think Corduroy will be next on our list. Thanks for the info! xo

Sorry, I'm a little late.  As a youth services librarian, I have amassed hundreds of books.  There really are too many to count.  I've tried to read each of them at least once, but there are definite favorites: "Hey, Al", "Pete's a pizza", "Ain't gonna paint no more", to name a few.  Current fav for both kids..."This is NOT a pumpkin" which is VERY expressive and perfect for the fall.  Thanks for promoting all things reading and literacy and library.  You continue to rock my socks off in all ways.  BTW, we are bringing our 4 yr old daughter to her first official concert...some band called Mates of State ;)!  We'll see you in Grand Rapids, MI!

your blog is so great!

my daughter, lily, has around 80 books and she is only 19 months old!  needless to say, reading is extremely important in our house.

i couldn't believe that you mentioned Mem Fox as we just got one of those books (Time For Bed) in the mail today from lily's "nana".  she told me how it made her cry at the bookstore and when i read it... i was soon crying!  i love the illustrations too.

thanks for the Read for the Record mention.  i'll definitely be checking into that tonight.

btw, we loved you on Yo Gabba Gabba.  i'm sure we'd all love to hear about Magnolia's reaction to seeing you guys on her favorite show.  can you possibly mention it in an upcoming blog post? :)

My 18 month old has about 45.  I didnt think we had that many, but I guess we do and I am sure that is only the beginning since reading is so important in our family.  I have been enjoying taking him to the public library and checking out 10 board books at a time.

It's funny I was always surrounded with books as a kid.  The odd thing about my upbringing was those books were mostly poetry as opposed to storybooks.  It was to the point where I actually didn't believe my friends who said their parents read them picture books.

I honestly thought everyone got read poetry in bed.  LOL

The sad thing is that as a household that has all adults in it these days; we still have way more childrens books. On top of that, the worst part is a lot of them are in the attic, sitting in boxes not being used.  I think I'm going to talk to my mom about donating them.  Thank you!

Your blog is so lovely.

As a library science grad student, I was thrilled to read your mention of Read for the Record.  I can't wait for this event at my local library!

Please keep us posted on your reading adventures with Magnolia and June.  :)

For your records, I have several boxes of children's books from my own childhood.

My son, Sevryn, has, at last count, 173. He's three.

What we do every night is read three books, "because I'm three mum!" (Actually, everything is done in increments of three these days; perhaps he's a bit OCD.)

I recommend this tactic, though, if your child--like mine--doesn't seem to have the patience to sit through a book. Sevvie settles right down to read, now that we're making it all about him!

Also, his favorite book is Five Little Monkeys, because he gets to be the doctor and TALK REALLY LOUD!

Does anyone know of a North American (I'm in Canada) agency that accepts donated books for children? I wonder if my local library would know ...
