Band on the Diaper Run

Newsworthy?

Click here to watch the story ABC World News (with Dan Harris) did on our touring family thing (kind of like the video version of what you can read on this blog)

I thought they did a good job of making me look less tired and more sane than I think I am.

We watched the story backstage before we played our last show in Baltimore (btw, Baltimore kicked ass, we loved every minute of playing that night, I even jumped around on stage and I've never really done that)

The best part was when each person in our crew cheered when they got screen time and then, at the end, our merch guy yelled, "That IS world news!!"

Dan Harris has an insanely cool job.  He sees things in his job that most of us can't even imagine.  He loves music and is a big supporter of small, interesting, independant bands.  And, he plays drums. When the Good Morning America version of this story airs (I think in 2 weeks) maybe they will include the clip of him playing drums on stage with us.

Jim, the main camera man-who was very sensitive to whether or not he was in our way, and also a man with great artistic ideas, is also a music fan.  He happened to see us years ago, pre-kids and is still supportive (especially since he has kids and knows that the life we lead is different than most)

I don't know how people with families do reality tv shows.  We were a little self-conscious with the cameras.  It's like having that fear of being judged all the time or something. That being said, everyone made us feel as comfortable as possible.

Except once, they filmed a close up shot of the food that was hanging off of my fork at dinner and I for a second thought, "They are gonna edit this and make me seem like a pig."  Thanks abc for not including me gobbling my greasy pasta with sausage.

Anyway, it was really nice of them to consider what we do important and interesting enough to be part of the news.

I was stoked they included footage of your show at the dame on the ABC special. Thanks for coming to Lexington, it was great to not have to drive for hours to see an excellent show.

P.S. your blog almost makes me want to have children, eventually.

P.P.S. You looked classy on the news. not insane at all.

That rocks.  Wow, Kori, I don't know how you survive on such little sleep.  You guys really seem to balance the parenting/jobbing thing we all have so much trouble with.  Great example for others to do work the jobs they want and still maintain family responsibility.  Thanks!

Awesome!!  I really loved the message of the story---you can do what you love and still be good parents.  I think so many people believe it's one or the other.  And, like it or not, you two are role models for all of us who are trying to figure out how to make it all work ;-)

I missed when it actually aired but watched it a couple nights ago. My mom called me right after she watched it (I didn't even know it was going to be on!) and she was all like "Omg, Jordan, your favorite band Mates of State was on TV and their kids are sooooo cute!" She thought the baby food in the contract thing was hilarious.

It was a really great segment! June and Magnolia have got to be the cutest kids ever.

What an inspiring bit of television for a former wanna-be rock star with two small kids of his own.  You make me want to try that much harder to be the best parent possible.  Thanks.

I watched that video and was practically overcome with giddiness that you get a moment in the spotlight. You guys are so damn cool, and I mean that in an unhealthy, I-could-never-do-it idol worship kind of way. You guys reveal to domesticated parents like me a little fantasy life that might not be always awesome when you're doing it, but soooooo cooooool (yet also soooooo parentally responsible)!!

How often can people manage to cram both of those descriptions into one lifestyle? That you seem to know how blessed you are -- even while utterly exhausted -- just makes you all that much cooler.

P.S. As the parent of a daughter who was that bald as an infant, what is it about bald babies that everyone just absolutely assumes they're boys unless you coat them head to toe in pink? Grr.

Mates of State

Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel

Kori Gardner is the organ-playing half of the band Mates of State; her husband, Jason Hammel, plays drums. Known for their vocal harmonies and euphoric melodies, Mates of State has been described by critics as "unabashed joy", "honesty at its best", a "two piece with balls", and "a band that you must see live." Their daughter, Magnolia, was born in 2004 and started touring with the band at 10 weeks. June, their second girl, was born early this year. The whole family is touring the world right now.
