Mimi Kirchner's Dolls a Mahar Drygoods Exclusive

Posted by Mir

Mimi Kirchner Hyacinth Doll

If the idea that these are artist-made makes it easier for you to cough up $125 for a rag doll, then it's your lucky day. I'm not denying that Mimi Kirchner's creations are lovely, understand, but -- fully articulated legs or no -- I'll stick to giving my kids things I won't mind having handled.

Hyacinth is pictured above, and both she and Poppy can be found exclusively at Mahar Drygoods.

I love Mimi Kirchner's work and was so happy to see that she's working with Mahar.  I think her work falls more into the growing category of art doll/toys which Mir is right, probably shouldn't be rough-housed with - but to Mahar's credit it is listed in their collectible's section and states as much.

I love Mimi's work and I agree with Marci, I see Mimi's work as falling in the Art dolls category and I wouldn't dream of giving a child a doll of such delicate beauty until they are old enough to appreciate all the hard work that goes into each creation.  Just because it is a "doll" doesn't necessarily mean it is for a baby.  It's like wine, you wouldn't cook with a $100 bottle.

A "rag doll"?  Mimi Kirchner's masterpieces are unique works of art, not mass marketed toys, and one would think that the reviewer would understand the difference.  These dolls are one of a kind collectibles that deserve to be treasured rather than manhandled.  While one of Mimi Kirchner's creations might not be appropriate for young children, their mother might love and appreciate one! :)

Mimi Kirchner is a creative, talented artist.  Her creations are beautiful and finely detailed.  I would never give a Mimi Kirchner doll to a young child:  they are unique treasures and not factory-made, mass-marketed, cheapo, disposable playthings.  If anything, her prices are low, given that she designs and creates the dolls herself.  If you subtracted the price of materials, and calculated the time she spends on a project and her skill level, the per-hour rate is probably quite low.

For some perspective, hand-made Waldorf dolls are in the $100-140 range and these are intended as children's playthings. The two things that a waldorf doll and a doll by Mimi Kirchner have in common are the fact that they are made by hand and the quality of the materials. They do not have the sense of humor and life that Mimi Kirchner brings to her dolls - I mean a Hawaiian Shirted big boyfriend doll or a naked robot doll, how much better does it get?
