Send a (Subtle) Message with the Brave Girl T-Shirt

Posted by Gwynne Watkins

You want your little girl to have great self-esteem, but those glitter-covered "Girls Rule, Boys Drool" shirts from the mall just aren't cutting it for you, are they? The Brave Girl T-Shirt from Sticker Sisters spreads a positive message without banging you over the head, and without any pink glitter: just a simple image of a girl dangling boldly upside-down from a tree branch. The design is available in kid, adult and baby sizes -- and no matter what the size, we think it speaks volumes. Buy it at Sticker Sisters.

Know what subtle message I get? Or, not so subtle? That these t-shirts are only for white girls. How unfortunate.

I’m the girl behind Sticker Sisters and this t-shirt. I wanted to respond to mrsjennahatfield’s comment. My customers are very diverse, and one of my goals is to make my website better reflect that diversity. Having Myisha (the girl in the photo) model the shirt was one step towards representing a more diverse group of girls and women on the site. When I was creating the shirt I wanted to make different versions with different skin tones. Unfortunately, I’m a really small operation and couldn’t afford to print more than one version. But I spent a lot of time working with my printer to mix a custom ink color that I thought was a middle ground that the widest range of people could relate to. It’s very important to me to encourage ALL girls to feel strong, smart, and proud of themselves. If anyone has any suggestions of how I might do that better, I’d love to hear them!
