Taro Gomi's Squiggles: The Book It's Okay to Deface

Posted by Aaron Burgess

With Scribbles and Doodles, both of which allow kids to do exactly that across the spare, open-ended designs throughout their pages, Everyone Poops creator Taro Gomi has already delivered two of the most wonderful coloring books in recent memory. Now, with the inch-thick Squiggles: A Really Giant Drawing and Painting Book ($18.95), Gomi adds even sturdier pages that allow kids to paint, as well as draw, to their imaginations' content.

As before, Gomi's thick, childlike lines start each page with the most basic of embellishments, and kids are free to add to the drawings however they like. The minimalist instructions on certain pages further invite kids to use their imaginations, with text ranging from the specific ("Let's paint what's in the sea. Start with lots of fish.") to the Zen-like and abstract ("The mountains are getting higher and higher..."). And while the book's appeal to wee ones is obvious, Squiggles makes a wonderful gift for anyone, artist or otherwise, whose creativity could benefit from a little playtime.
