14 Days of Nursery: Growing Crib for Changing Spaces

Posted by Aaron Burgess

Click here to read about the Stokke Sleepi Crib, a modern/minimalist bed designed to grow with your baby all the way through the big-kid years

I'll be the first to admit there's something off-putting about this Stokke Sleepi Crib (pictured here in its "Mini" version), and that's not just the $1,150 price tag. But if you're strapped for space and also need a bed that's going to grow with your baby through the big-kid years, maybe you wouldn't mind sacrificing warm-fuzzy design for functional minimalism. Plus, you know, the thing does come with a drapery rod, so you can hang a piece of fabric over it and re-enact your own final scene in Rosemary's Baby, only with Ray and Charles Eames in place of Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes, or, you know, whatever.

As your little one grows, so does the Sleepi: The adjustable mattress position (four heights in total), expandable frame and removable center railing accommodate sizes ranging from baby to toddler to junior kiddo, and it even has a life beyond that, as you can separate it into chairs when it's officially time to invest in a bigger bed. All of which kind of puts that price tag into better perspective, as you're looking at roughly $287.50 per growth stage -- probably not far from what you'd spend at IKEA when you factor in all the stage-by-stage purchases and inevitable breakage. (Or maybe it's just my kids who snap IKEA furniture like so many Bruce Lee practice boards.)

Stage two: bigger baby:

Stage three -- toddler:

Stage four -- one chair to seat them all:

I have this crib without any of the "expansion packs" (ie bassinet mattress and junior bed kid).  If you are a little tight on space, or just don't like the look of your kid sleeping in a mini sleigh bed, this is a great alternative.  I paid around $750.00 for the crib, which at first seemed expensive until you break down the cost...Its a wood crib (not MDF) made of sustainably harvested beech wood with a non-toxic finish and includes the mattress-try finding a solid wood crib and a decent mattress for that price anywhere else. Also, it converts to a toddler bed WITHOUT an addition conversion kit (which usually run $150+).  All in all, not a bad buy.

I've got the bassinet/crib combo, in the same colors as the above pictures, no less.  Love it.  Yes, it's pricey.  But I saved up my pennies and went for it.  Really wanted a piece that would last through a couple kids and beyond.

Also, our house is completely covered in hardwood floors, so the wheels really come in handy.  The little nipper goes wherever I go!

I have that bed. It is the only thing that would fit beside our bed before we moved. I have the junior kit - you didn't picture that last transformation nor the rod

My wife and I are really glad with this purchase since it's not huge like most cribs. It can also convert into two chairs once your kid out grows the toddler bed conversion.
