ERGObaby Carrier – $92

The ERGO carrier was first recommended to me by another urban-dweller who swore the weight distribution to the hips and shoulders was much better for women and their aching backs. Whether science is on the side of the ERGO or it just was a better carrier for me personally, it made a huge difference when my daughter grew out of that easy-to-carry stage, yet I still needed to get about town on foot. This softer and floppier cousin to the Björn is still useful now that I have a two-year-old as the most efficient way of carrying her short distances in a hurry, and I’m confident the padding on the shoulder straps contributes to that comfort. The weight max is 40 lbs on the ERGO, (higher than most carriers) and even at this weight, it is still simple to move the kiddo in and out of the carrier without assistance (although I did have difficulty with the back position, however, another tester did not).

The ERGO is a series of straps and buckles which can initially be confusing, but in learning how the ERGO works, it becomes fairly simple to sort out. Caveat - with every carrier, you’ve got to read all of the instructions to ensure no baby droppage. The new ERGO models have the very welcome improvement of the permanently attached chest strap, eliminating those fishing expeditions as the buckles slide down your back as you try to hold onto your wiggly bundle. The ERGO has also updated the baby hood to keep the little heads from lolling. The snaps go directly onto the shoulder straps, eliminating the extra steps and allowing you to adjust the length of the straps depending on the size of your baby.

One complaint frequently heard is about the lack of options in carrying positions. You cannot let the baby face out in this carrier; it’s front-facing, shotgun and piggy back only. ERGO counters that babies can get over stimulated when facing outwards and babies are comforted when being held close while making eye contact with mom or dad. My daughter enjoys the inward facing position as long as she's pretty sure she's not missing anything. So while it's not the best choice for parade day, normal trips to her buddy's house are a-okay.

Style-wise the ERGO is fairly unisex with a few patterns that could be considered ‘hip’, but the mostly dark solids in the ERGO repertoire keep it urban and simple enough to appeal to every type of mom and dad with a load to carry. But if you really want to be fashion forward, this lady will pimp that ERGO. - April Peveteaux

Personally, I think it's ugly. I would never buy it.

This is the best baby carrier I have ever owned!(and I have many) There is no carrier that offers the amazing support that the Ergo offers. Aesthetics are certainly not my main priority when looking for something to do such a huge job! Everyone in my Mama circle sports this carrier with pride and comfort!

I've reviewed (on my blog) and own both the ERGO and the Beco and the Beco is both more attractive and slightly more comfortable...though a little pricier.

But the ERGO is a huge improvement over the Bjorn, and may convince macho types to wear baby ("look honey, it's like a backpack, but with our baby in it").

I have an Ergo and I love it. NB, though - babies don't grow into them until they're about 5-6 months (possibly earlier, depending on their size). Still, from then on it has rocked.

I think the Ergo is ugly too, so I have never tried it.  I have worn a Mayawrap sling for about 10 years, each of my 5 youngest children spent at least a year and some more like 3 years in a Mayawrap. They are SO pretty, and comfortable for both mama and baby.

But if an Ergo gets babies out of buckets (see my blog) and into skin-to-skin contact, then hurrah!

I have the ERGO and LOVE it!  I feel it is the best carrier on the market!  It might not be as pretty as some others, but the support it gives your back and the fact that I can carry my 35 lb. 2 yr old on my back (and she will fall asleep on there) makes it a WINNER for me!!!

Valerie--Both the ERGO and BECO have newborn inserts (separate purchase), so you can use it right from the start...though personally I prefer a wrap, pouch, or ring sling for a newborn.

I just wanted to comment that although Ergos are functional, great baby carriers with a great design their companies practices are less then great for what is advertised as a mom owned and operated business. To start with the Ergo is made in China unlike many of it's counterparts which are made in the US, such as the Beco. Secondly, Ergo has decided to stop letting WAHM businesses sell the Ergo due to issues with selling volume even though Ergo depended on WAHMs to get the word out about their new carriers. However, whats really disgusted me the most is that Ergo is looking to sue any business that sells a similar baby carrier, claiming they invented soft structured baby carriers. I find this insane considering that baby carriers similar to the Ergo have been sold for decades and their design is obviously inspired by Asian style baby carriers. I give them credit for adding padding and a sleep hood, but other then that their carriers are honestly not that original. Carriers like the Beco, Patapum, AngelPack etc are also unique in their own right and are not direct copies of the Ergo like their company has accused them of being.

I just love the Beco, hands down over the Ergo! More comfortable for me, plus it is much more stylish.
