First Week Home: The Best Bottle

Posted by editors

As you may have gathered from my previous posts, I’m breastfeeding. But due to weight gain problems, we had to supplement for a while – and now, I occasionally have to leave the house for more than two hours, so my husband bottle-feeds him pumped milk. We tried a number of bottles during those first difficult weeks. Some of them, he wouldn’t take at all. Others, he’d drink from, but it would be a messy, long process with frequent burping.

Until we discovered  the Playtex Drop-Ins System. The Playtex website describes this as:

A bottle system with a Nurser holder and pre-formed, pre-sterilized liners. The liner collapses as baby drinks to keep air out of the liquid and out of baby. It is clinically shown to reduce gas and colic, and clinically shown to mimic breastfeeding.

All I know is that they make feedings go three times as fast, with no fussing and minimal burping (and for the record, no nipple confusion). A starter set of bottles and liners is available on Amazon for $19.99

I just got these, before I had the Playtex VentAire's, which are not safe so I switched to these.  They are so easy to use and we had no problems switching him over.  However I don't see the liner actually collaping before my eyes.  On the other hand he certainly dosen't burp as much.

I use the drop-in system when I don't feel like cleaning bottles.  They are okay. But the BEST "transition" bottles, I think, are Sassy MAM bottles. They are hard to find in stores, but try Amazon.  They are BPA-free and awesome!  They are also less expensive than Born Free, which I like, but the little one prefers her Sassy MAM bottles.  (Yes, I have tried every brand.) Honestly, I don't know why these bottles are not more popular.

I used these bottles for 3 kids. They are awesome and worked great for one of my twins who had trouble sucking (both with the breast and bottle). I buy the target brand drop in liners for half the price and they work just fine (no  leaking). LOVE THESE BOTTLES.

I too used these after the whole BPA scare, since the liners don't contain BPA, but my daughter hated them, and the milk flowed so fast it went all over her face (even with the slow flow nipple.  I switched to the Sassy MAM bottles and my daughter loves them.

I'm on my second baby with these and they have been wonderful.  They were recommended by our pediatrician with our first child.  Less gas and less spit up!  It was a very easy transition from breast feeding.  Kelly - Are you making sure that you squeeze the air out of the bottle before the baby drinks?  If you do the liners should go down as they drink.  I also buy the Target brand liners which work just as well for half the price.

Another BF mom who uses these. We tried them in the NICU and found that they worked well for our refluxy preemie. He still uses slow-flow nipples at 8.5 months to mimic the speed of nursing. We also use the Target liners.
