Spit Up: Trucker Mud Flap Baby Shoes

Posted by Erin Behan

I try to toe the line when it comes to children and gender. On the one hand, I realize that dressing a boy in a hot pink outfit isn't really worth the trouble (He's a girl? But that's pink. Are you sure he's a girl?), but on the other I don't want to outright reinforce gender sterotypes (that means if my boy wants a doll, I'll let him have one even though I, as a girl, hate dolls). And then there are these shoes, which jump right into the fray with what I see as straight-up sexism. Now I know a baby doesn't know any better, but is it really OK to use your kid as your own sexist billboard? If you think so, you can have the Me in Mind shoes in four sizes (newborn through 18 months) for $26.

What do the readers think? Harmlessly silly or blatantly sexist?

oh sick.  way to get your kid started being a miller high life -drinking, wife beater-wearing white trash slob early.  that's not kitsch.  it's not cute.  it's just sad.

Completely inappropriate, and unfunny.  I can get on board with snarky shirts (I bought a onesie for a friends baby with a pooch on the frome that reads, "Dingo snack), but funny and offensive are miles apart, and this is offensive.

Are you serious??!!  Who puts their kids in this stuff?  I think it is inappropriate on mud flaps and this is way off the inappropriate chart.

I'm not sure why the image of the mud flap girl is offensive in and of itself.  It's essentially just a woman in profile.   By choosing to be offended by it (and that is definitely your choice to make), you just lend it more power in that direction.  Maybe the mud flap girl is a really cool, smart, interesting chick who just happens to have really big boobies.  I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt.  I think she deserves it after so many years riding around on mud flaps.

I'd dress my son in those.  They're funny.  Honestly?  I really can't tell what the big deal is.  I'm more annoyed by the fact that I can't buy him a baby doll that doesn't have "little mommy" plastered all over it.

People please lighten up, a sense of humor is required with being a parent!

Maybe the issue is that grownups can wear snarky t-shirts (or mud flap girl symbols) with a sense of irony, a quality babies often lack. =)

I love the mud flap girl so much I wrote a book of sonnets about her; however, I'd be much more likely to dress my hypothetical girl baby in these shoes than my hypothetical boy baby.

I LOVE THEM!! i think they are adoreable. you know what, my baby would be the coolest on the block if they were wearing these shoes. i think that some women are just insecure so they get offended by these images. if you are okay with yourself and your relationship you shouldn't have a problem with these. it's just like dressing your baby in harley shirts or shorts. i love them. bravo.
