Down with Disposable Wipes

Posted by Lisa Mulcahy

We’ve covered many kinds of cloth diapers here at Droolicious, but have you seen these cloth wipes?

I’ll be totally honest, I have not embraced cloth diapering and don’t know if I could get over putting poopy wipes into my washing machine, but nonetheless, thought I’d share these from Bummas. Use them instead of wet wipes, as a pee pee tepee for boys, or simply as a washcloth. They come in sets of ten for $16.99, with sassy names like, for the boys, for the girls, the calm ones and the wild ones (shown here).

Anybody here use cloth wipes. What do you think?

We use both cloth diapers & wipes.  We bought huge packs of wipes from Burlington Coat Factory for something like 20/$3 or something b/c they were irregular.  Wipes are not somewhere you need to spend a lot of money, even for cloth ones.  They're great--we use them for everything from wiping the baby down after mealtime to using at diaper changing time.  B/c there's no chemicals (like in wipes), you won't ever irritate the kid's diaper area, and IMO they do a better job of wiping up poop.  You just need to remember to grab the cloth wipes & wet them BEFORE you get to the changing table, of course.  Stick them in the same repository where you put dirty diapers prior to wash, and you're done.  The ONLY time we use disposable wipes is in the diaper bag for on the road changes (although we still use cloth diapers even then).  But $16 for 10?  Keep in mind you're using these to wipe up poop.  Get cheap wipes (or make them yourselves) and use the money on getting good cloth diapers.

We use cloth diapers (diaper service) and cloth wipes. I love cloth wipes. I've gotten a lot of nice double-sided flannel ones off of Etsy. And I will admit that I've paid more for cute ones, because I change so many diapers a day, I might as well look at toile or something nice. The best part about cloth wipes is that you don't need to use nearly as many. A messy poop that takes 10 disposable wipes takes 2-3 cloth wipes. And, like Renee said, I think it's nicer to wipe with plain water on sensitive baby butts (or, at least, it has worked better for my babies). When they grow out of diapers, we have used the wipes to clean up anything from paint splattered on a tabletop to dirty hands to peanut butter face. (Maybe this is another way I justify buying cute wipes from Etsy...they last longer and can be used for myriad non-diapering messes.)

If you want cloth wipes, you go to the fabric store and buy a couple of yards of flannel, which costs about $2.00/yard (or even less, if you don't care about the pattern). Then you cut out a bunch of squares, put them together with your sewing machine  and make double thick wipes. (or you can just cut squares and use the single ply, too, no sewing required) Instead of 10 for 16.99, you get about 30 for about 4 bucks. I've used the same wipes over and over since my 19 month old was born - and if I've thrown one or two out because the stains didn't come out, who cares? It only cost me about 20 cents!

honestly, i wouldn't be spending $17 on a pack of wipes when i've found cheapo $3 for 12 baby face cloths to be more than adequate for our CD'ing needs...
