Discuss: Will You Cut Personal Spending to Buy Your Kids Toys?

Posted by Erin Behan

The New York Times has an interesting article that tracks the trend of mothers going without designer jeans so their children can have designer toys. Obviously, moms have always been ones to sacrifice for their families, and while the idea behind the article is sound, it still rings a bit shallow to me. If one really can't afford all the best toys, why not have a discussion with your kids about why the cut-backs have to happen (for the whole family)? What steps are you taking this year to help soften the financial blow of Christmas in a time of economic uncertainty? Discuss.

We are cutting back this Christmas.  I am making my daughter tutus.  She is a diva and they are super easy and inexpensive to make.  My son we are going to pick one thing that he will truly love versus a bunch of boxes of stuff.  My husband and I are not exchanging gifts to each other.  We draw names in the other parts of the family and everyone there has agreed to cut down the spending limit.  It seems universal, at least in our world, the desire to cut back and focus on the bigger picture.

I also agree on talking with your kids.  My parents shouldn't have bought us all the stuff they did when I was a kid.  I still think that learning about saving and being thrifty is a bigger gift to a child than teaching them they can have what they want, they just have to borrow the money to get it.  Credit cards are not our money is a lesson I will teach my children.  I wish someone had taught that to me.
