How to Call on Your Trusty Sidekick

Posted by JeanneSager

If we could follow our kids everywhere, we just might. But when your kids go out and about, wouldn’t it be nice to know they have a Trusty Sidekick on their side?

Thanks to Becky Smith and her superhero store, every kid can wear their special powers on their shirt sleeves. A mom of two, Smith started sewing superheros when her son William begged to go super for his fifth birthday. She’s been selling them at her Etsy shop since early 2008, sending out super-soft tees with Kapow power.

"There is something about superhero play that I love, the working together to protect the world and conquer evil part,” Smith says. “The image of a kid in a makeshift cape bounding to save their little brother from aliens really tickles me.”

Is that the super tickler? The KAPOW shirts sell for $26. Get your kids jumping skyscrapers in a single bound over at Trusty Sidekick on Etsy.

I grew up reading Marvel comics throughout 70's (including buying back issues as a young collector).  Every month I saved up my money from doing odd jobs, washing boats and cars, and so I always had some change to buy my favorites at the local comic shop.  X-men, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Avengers and Spidey, along with a few others.

From those comics, I developed an enormous vocabulary.  I knew how to spell "annihilate" and what it meant by age 7.  Almost all of the superheroes were also scientists, or engineers, or just super smart do-gooding lawyers (aka Daredevil).

So, I had a great respect for science and education because just super powers alone would not be enough to stop the bad guys.  Because they too were geniuses, but they failed to adopt the penultimate characteristic of a great super hero character, as Peter Parker said so eloquently, "With great power comes great responsibility".

My kid will totally get one of these shirts (and the various "40 years of Marvel Comics" collections out now on DVD's, which would be a great item for you guys to post!  Great thing about those is that he won't shred up my collection but can still read all the stories and see the art!)  :)
