First Look: Trendy Outfit for Moms-to-Be

Posted by Nicole Feliciano

Motherhood doesn’t equal frumpyhood.

We get it.  No one wants to spend a mint right now on maternity clothes.  But that doesn’t mean you have to live in stretched out sweats.  We’ve found a trendy new outfit from Motherhoodmaternity.com that will have you feeling “in” without maxing out your credit card.

For a kicky spring outfit we love the boyfriend jean paired with a girly ruffle top.  Motherhood Maternity's charmeuse blouse with ruffle neck and banded smock bottom will work for date night or a girls’ brunch ($19.98).  And the jeans look just like the pair Katie Holmes wears out and about.  Since we don’t have Tom’s bankroll we think spending under $50 for these Motherhood Maternity's Destructed Secret Fit Belly boyfriend jean ($44.98) sounds about right.

Amazingly, if you are an 16-18W to begin with, and gotten slightly larger, as happens when you are preggie...you cannot purchase a wardrobe of skirts for a pregnant woman to wear to work, unless you like to wear black, every time.  For most professional environments, they don't have to be suit material, but they cannot be jersey knit or flouncy causal either.  Just simple business appropriate skirts in basic non-patterned colors (Navy, White, Tan, Gray) to go with all the cute and colorful tops she has for spring/summer.

I've searched both online and in-store at all of the following:

Motherhood and A Pea in the Pod which both have the same parent company and customer service number.  They simply do not have any skirts in XL at all, nor larger sizes.  At least, not in anything you can wear to a professional environment.

Target where I did find a khaki color skirt here but not in a business-ey type of material...though it will work in a pinch, and I also found a gray striped skirt that works, however neither of them have any give in the waist, so they will only fit for a small window of time as she busily gestates away, oh, and there was a non-maternity XXL in a gored navy which I found online at Target.com that should work for awhile, but not past about month 6-7.  I got them two sizes too big for now because she can barely fit into her current skirts and doesn't need to put any pressure on the belly all day, in meetings and such.

Old Navy with half a dozen styles which might be great if you're a hippie chick hanging at the park, buy there was nothing in the store as they are phasing their maternity department out, at least that was the case according the the store clerk.

Gap Maternity, which is great for stay at home moms or those who don't work at a financial institution and you only need three choices of floppy see through skirts that wrinkle in .03 seconds.

Nordstrom, which has a tiny selection, especially of anything in a Plus size and everything is over priced and barf styles that you might find on daytime soaps.

Sadly, Macy's doesn't even HAVE a maternity department.  I buy nearly everything for my wife here normally in the Woman department (aka Plus Size).  They have an excellent selection of non-maternity clothes and she's got a closet full of awesome Jones New York and Ralph Lauren.

JC Penny has a Maternity department with one black skirt, the Duo Maternity, in black.  I got that because it is super stretchy and should work until D day.  But that is the only one they had.  I did find the same thing online in Gray and Chocolate Brown, which is awesome.  Even though it only goes up to XXL, they stretch so well it should work.

So, in skirt world for maternity, there is a dearth of options.  Motherhood/Pea in the Pod (which used to be Mimi) say they are undergoing a big change over and are awaiting summer re-supply.  I hope they are right and they do come in before month 6-7.  Their "secret fit" belly design seems the smartest option out there, but I hope they will have them in a basic business friendly style in Navy, Tan, White, and Gray (in addition to the ubiquitous Black out there right now).

I also searched Amazon, but they just regurgitate the same things I have seen at each individual store online.

Pants aren't a great option, but I'll take

em if they come in the right size and are super stretchy around the waist.  However, she's 5'2", so every one of them has to be tailored and that gets spendy.

Dresses are tough to fit her also, at her height, and ample bosom, it really is an issue and she'd have to coordinate tops that keep her in check, leaning over to help her employees working on their computers.  Don't need any harassment suits or accidental head injuries, ya know.

One last caveat, I really do not want to have to spend $130+ per skirt.  There are a few boutique shops out there, but dang, that is a kick in the daddy pants to have to pay that much for a skirt that will be worn for 3-5 months maximum, maybe a couple more on the post-party side of things.

Can you tell I am frustrated with this?

Anyone have a suggestion?  Or am I tilting at textile-mills?

Maternity dress styles are now the trend. Even the outfit is not mainly for preggy mommies, long hanging blouses are still that popular to single women.

That way, we can still fit them up as it's season.

Nicole, I think I have found an answer for Plus size clothes, skirts in particular, which has been the real sticky wicket in my wardrobe hunt for my wife.

Ebay!

It's not a perfect answer, as you never know for sure with Ebay, but there are many reputable looking sellers.  And, of course, they clothes are used.  So, there's that.  But they are probably lightly used, given their window of time of usefulness!

And the prices are good...and they actually HAVE stuff to consider, unlike all the stores out there right now!  LOL

I am also going to check out my local consignment stores to see if they have anything.

Determined persistence and clever resourcefulness.  That's how I made it the last 10 years as a solo computer tech.  If I can apply that to maternity wardrobe shopping and stay-at-home-dadding, I think I'll do okay.  :)
