I was first introduced to the Sock and Glove book by my sister, who was then at Penguin and helping with the English version of this adorable book. Although there are several books out there that give step-by-step instructions on turning socks and gloves into adorable animals, this one somehow manages to be the cutest. It no doubt helps that it was originally published in Japan, a country that knows a thing or two about cute. Its instructions are also amazingly simple to follow and require no special sewing skills. If you trust your kids with sharp objects and needles, they'll be able to handle the project, and as long as you have spare socks/gloves, a pair of sewing scissors, a needle and some thread, you're both good to go. I've made several of these myself and given them away as baby shower gifts--always a big hit and always hard to let go.
