To buy a high chair or not to buy a high chair: This question depends on a complex matrix of space, aesthetics, function and of course, price. Blargh, the price. Even basic high chairs can be shockingly expensive with rare exceptions like long-time Droolicious favorite, the Ikea Antilop High Chair. Now, Ikea has come out with the Spoling High Chair for only $39.99. The frame of the chair is made of powder-coated steel, and the seat is a removable, machine-washable polyester. ABC Kids Expo 2008: Kaboost Deluxe Portable Chair Booster

We've written about Kaboost before. It's the portable chair booster that allows your child to sit at the proper height of the table, eliminating the need for a separate high chair. The new product they are showing at ABC is the Kaboost Deluxe, which is a normal Kaboost with a travel bag (sitting on the chair in the picture) in the (Deluxe only) charcoal color.

There's no doubt Kaboost is a cool concept, and one thing I learned from the rep at ABC was that Kaboost will fit any four point chair, including a Stokke Tripp Trapp. This kind of seems like it's defeating the purpose of a Tripp Trapp in the first place, but they said they had customers who weren't happy with the height of the Tripp Trapp and the Kaboost was the perfect solution. The other interesting thing about a Kaboost is that it increases the base of any chair it is underneath, thereby increasing the overall stability of the chair.

ABC Kids Expo 2008: Stokke Baby Set

Stokke had some new products at ABC this year, and my favorite is what they're calling the "Baby Set." It's a plastic railing (for kids aged six to eighteen months) that goes around your Tripp Trapp chair, but now it has a higher back for extra support. I'm a huge fan of the Trip Trapp chair for older kids, and with this attachment I can really see using it as a high chair for any aged child. It's available in all eleven colors that the Tripp Trapp is available in, or you can mix and match like in the picture above.

New From Svan: "Green" Convertible Highchair

We've noted Svan's intelligent highchair design before (see moderndaydad's post), but we'll run through the basics: a slick look that moves from 6-month-old babies to 50-pound 5-year-olds, the option of tray or table dining and adjustable seat depth, tray and footrest height. But Anka, the new entry into the Svan family has a few more tempting features, including sustainable design and a much lower price.

First, the "green" jargon. Anka's tray is dishwasher safe and phthaltate and bisphenol-A free. The foam padding in the washable seat cushion is PBDE-free (for those of you wondering what that is, it's a flame-retardant chemical that may or may not be safe--see Wikipedia). The highchair has also been constructed from sustainable wood.

Now, the price. It's just $169.95. It's nice when design, price and useful products align so nicely. (Oh and the thing even folds for easy storage.) Get it at Generation Orange, which is taking pre-orders now for a mid-July ship date.

This week we've shown you some cool high chairs, and we've shown you some pretty crazy looking high chairs too, but my pick is easily the cheapest.

My favorite traditional high chair (that is, a chair with a tray attached) is the Antilop high chair from Ikea. It's functional, modern, and will cost you a whopping $23.99. And that's with the tray.

The Antilop high chair has been working well in my family for years. It's functional, cleans very easily, and is perfectly simple. There is a seat belt for squirmy kids, and unlike a lot of other monstrosities out there, it won't be an eyesore in your kitchen. And it's so cheap, you can be a big spender and do like I did and buy one for Grandma and Grandpa's house too.

7 Days of High Chairs: e27 re-serve

Its name doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but that's the only complex thing about the German-designed e27 re-serve. Among the more minimalist high chairs you're likely to find (and to be honest, it looks almost too minimal for the price), the re-serve is designed to be both light and easy to clean, with its shot-blasted stainless-steel frame covered in the same sort of washable, padded 600D nylon fabric that's used in many handbags and pieces of luggage.

The height also puts Junior right up to the edge of the table -- a bonus, given that the relatively small tray doesn't offer a ton of space on its own for kids who like to color and play while waiting for their bauernfrühstück to arrive:

Meals can become a shockingly long process once solid food enters the menu, so it’s best that everyone involved has a comfy seat. The Inglesina Zuma High Chair not only features double seat pads, but it adjusts at several points to adapt to your dining set up.

Though recent high chair designs have started to move from plastic to posh, it's still not easy to find a chair that's a good mix of pleasing and practical. The Babylon high chair fills that balance nicely.

Made of baltic birch plywood, it has a seat height adjustable to eight positions (moving from coffee table-level to bar top-level) and has an optional infant tray. And its simple, straightforward design fits into most modern decor without drawing too much attention to itself. You can find the Babylon available in seven different colors (including pink!) for $198. To add the infant kit, it's $65, and cushions are $34.

Tripp Trapp: Not a High Chair but a Transition Chair

If you're looking for the perfect high chair for your brand new I-just-started-eating-solid-foods son or daughter, then check out some of the other chairs we've written about. However if your child has outgrown that high chair and you're looking for something better than a booster, then the Tripp Trapp from Stokke might be the chair for you.

The Tripp Trapp from Stokke (or KinderZeat in Europe) is a clever design that allows the seat and foot rest to adjust as your child grows. I guess the theory is that if young legs aren't swinging about (as they would in a normal dinner chair) then your child will be less fidgety at the table. Better than that though is the way it looks. Reminiscent of the Rietveld Zig Zag chair, it's a chair you won't mind having to look at every day.

There are cushions you can buy, but I think they kind of ruin the look, not to mention they become one more thing to keep clean. There's even a plastic enclosure so an infant won't fall out, but I don't recommend that either, Leave the high chairs for the babies, and this chair for the big kids.

Oh, and one last thing. Having just purchased my second, I'm definitely not a fan of the new strap system they've implemented (you can find pictures on their web site) I prefer the old lap belt only. But as a chair for kids who have graduated to the family's table, it's still my favorite.

Svan Chair: A High Chair for the Entire Childhood

One of the things that Jessica Alba got from Tyra last week is a high chair I think I've seen, but have never really checked out. The Svan Chair looks like it hits all the marks of good baby furniture: functional, convertible as your child grows, beautiful to look at and, considering how long you'll use it, reasonably priced.

Aside from looking good, the best feature of the Svan Chair is how it grows with your child. It starts out as a normal chair with a tray, then when the tray is removed and you can sit your child at the table without fear of having them fall out. Then the seat can be lowered as your child grows. Plus it has a foot rest, giving restless swinging legs a place to be. It's not the cheapest chair at $250, but considering how many years it will be at your kitchen table, it seems with it to me.

Jessica Alba Baby Shower "Gifts"

If you haven't heard yet (and if you haven't, then you really should be reading FameCrawler more often), Tyra Banks just threw Jessica Alba a baby shower on her television show (because really, if there's one person who needs free kids stuff, it's the Fantastic Four's Invisible Girl). Apparently the Tyra Show got together with MomLogic.com and came up with a bunch of new products that every new Hollywood mom must have. After the jump I'll list them (along with some of my own snarky comments).

The Cariboo Classic Bassinet ($359.95) & Cariboo Activity Gym ($159.95). A beautiful, expensive bassinet that she'll use for about six months and then get rid of.

Cariboo Puretec Blankets $99.95 - $159.95. A baby blanket for $159.95 doesn't even deserve a comment.

Lillebaby Euro Tote ($119.95). Baby in a bag! We've been talking about these for a while on Droolicious.

Svan High Chair ($249.95). Even at that price, it's hard to make a snide comment about a beautiful high chair. Even though if you so much as cut a piece of pizza on it you'll dramatically reduce the resale value. OK. It wasn't that hard.

Svan Scooter ($119.95). For the right age group (i.e. not Jessica's impending infant) this is a really cool product.

Svan Bouncer ($119.95) For a hundred and twenty dollars it better take care of the midnight feeding too.

Yo My Booties Baby Booties ($50). If you can't put your infant in Uggs, super-furry baby shoes are probably the next best thing.

Yo My Booties Zebra and Cheetah Sweaters ($85). Expensive, but these look pretty cool.

Yo My Booties Pom Pom Hat ($50). Isn't a baby hat for $50 the definition of conspicuous?

Valco Baby TriMode All Terrain Stroller ($425) with Infant Bassinet ($150). No comment. I'm a Bugaboo man myself.

Lautrec Toulouse Diaper Bag ($236), Mommy Chic Diaper Bag ($395) & Femme Chic Diaper Bag ($360). Any one of these would be way too much money, but three? If you're worried about your kid crapping on it, it's time to get a new diaper bag. And if you don't care about your kid crapping on a $395 diaper bag? More power to you.

Bel Bambini Gift Basket ($500) and Gift Certificate ($1000). Oh. I guess there wasn't enough free crap. Now she can go pick out some more herself.

So there it is. And the grand total of all the free swag Jessica Alba is getting? About $4,861.50 by my calculations.
