Big Deal: Petunia Pickle Bottom's Semi-Annual Sample Sale

Petunia Pickle Bottom's sample sale is tomorrow and runs through October 20. Petunia Pickle Bottom's bags will be from 30% to 70% off so this is quite the opportunity to score an incredible diaper bag.

The sale is benefiting a charity called The Hands and Feet Project, which benefits an orphanage in Haiti. They're hoping to match donations made online by shoppers to raise $20K, but Petunia will be donating 10k regardless of how much is raised by shoppers.

Droolworthy: Petunia Pickle Bottom Diaper Bags

Petunia Pickle Bottom, besides having a fantastic name, makes scrumptious diaper bags and coordinating baby slings. (We've reviewed their Serenity Slings in the past so I'll focus on the diaper bags.) Known for using exotic brocade patterns, Petunia’s bags are sophisticated and beautiful enough to be worn as handbags, long after the need to carry diapers.

Petunia now offers a new collection of glazed canvas (PVC free) bags that have the look of brocade but can be easily wiped clean. These bags are as glamorous as her original bags but can be worn every day without any worries.

The names of the fabrics are as delicious as the bags themselves: Nightfall in Madrid, Idealistic Istanbul, Moroccan Roll, to name a few. Choose from many sizes depending on how much or how little you need to carry.

The Babble Review: Petunia Pickle Bottom Serenity Sling

I had originally planned on reviewing this (and other) baby slings myself, with the help of my baby. Turns out that little Devin hates slings, *hates* them. Will tolerate the Bjorn (outward facing only) and Ergo, but start to even set him in a sling and he'll cry bloody murder--luckily I wasn't so into the attachment parenting thing. So, I enlisted a friend, writer and fellow new mommy, Leah Clarkson, to review a new Petunia Picklebottom sling. Her review follows.

The Serenity Sling by Petunia Pickle Bottom ($91 at Nordstrom) comes in three irresistibly pretty brocade designs with a very soft, water-resistant nylon-blend lining. With no awkward buckles or loops, it's easy to slide on, and baby can be worn cradle-style, chest-to-chest, or on the hip; my two-month old daughter was too big for the cradle hold but seemed quite content against my chest. Major drawback here is that the fabric has very little stretch, meaning bigger babies' legs will hang out the bottom when riding chest-to-chest or on the hip, and the sling won't have the longevity some of the other stretchier/adjustable versions out there have. In sum—this sling is probably best for smaller infants, and has more aesthetic than practical appeal.

First Week Home: 3 Great Non-Girly Diaper Bags

Let’s be honest with each other: any bag can be a diaper bag. But although I sometimes leave the house with only a few diapers and a burp cloth stashed in my regular purse, I really like these 3 diaper bags.* The abundance of pockets and super-practical design means I’ll probably continue to use them long after I stop using diapers. And since they’re not pink and frilly, my husband and I can switch off without shame.

Dadgear “Messenger” Diaper Bag - $82

Best Feature: The main pocket has an ingenious Velcro closure, allowing for easy access to all your stuff – even when you’re holding a baby.

Downside: For a large bag, it has a pretty narrow space – so bulky items don’t always fit.

Petunia Picklebottom “Scout” Diaper Bag - $235

Best Feature: It’s gorgeous. My husband has co-opted this bag as a briefcase and has gotten tons of compliments. In fact, PPB includes two separate inserts for the bag, one of which is designed for post-baby laptop carrying. It also comes with a generously sized changing pad.

Downside: It’s solid leather, which means it’s heavy. Also, it’s expensive. But my husband plans on using it until it falls apart -- which will probably be in about fifty years.

Skip Hop “Dash” Diaper Bag - $64

Best Feature: The outside pockets, with Velcro or magnetic closures, allow for easy access to keys and pacifiers. Also fits perfectly over stroller handles.

Downside: I dig the 70s color scheme. My husband does not.

It’s a changing table, bassinet and play area in one. The design is ingenious. And my baby is obsessed with the included mobile.

2. Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe Blankets - from Babble Best Swaddle Blankets

These Velcro-tabbed blankets make swaddling a cinch for the parents – and the baby actually stays wrapped all night.

3. Diaper Dekor - from Babble Best Diaper Pails

I was skeptical about the refill system (it doesn't take conventional garbage bags), but it's ridiculously easy to use and refills last weeks. Plus, the diaper smell is totally, miraculously contained.

4. My Brest Friend - from Babble Best Nursing Pillows

I love the Boppy for several reasons (we’ll get to that in the next post), but in the early days of learning to feed – when the baby was tiny and I was exhausted – the extra support from the My Brest Friend was a lifesaver.

Petunia Pickle Bottom makes some gorgeous diaper bags, but they definitely err on the frilly side. So I did a double-take when I got a look at the forthcoming Scout Collection: rugged and handsome, these look like diaper bags that Indiana Jones would carry. The Rubicon Rucksack and the Journey Pack come equipped with tons of pockets and compartments, as well as changing pads and stroller clips. They also feature "etched and debossed logos, custom hardware and antique brass Scout-monogrammed wipes case." More photos after the jump!

The Journey Pack will sell for $135. SO MANY POCKETS.

I swore up and down I'd never spend tons of cash on a diaper bag. Never. Ever. But I love me some Petunia Pickle Bottom. And the new Cake diaper satchel line? Yummy.
