My daughter can not comprehend why a Mummy is called a mummy. She knows that ‘Mummy’ is a highfalutin term for mother, but has yet to grasp the whole idea that the same word can be used for very different things. To add to the confusion, I should totally get her a big and small Mummy dolls from Inhabitshop.com. These handmade cotton plush toys, when presented in a pair like above, totally look like it could be a mother and child. So it would be a Mummy mummy! Yeah, that oughta keep her busy for a wheel. You can pick up one of these adorable dolls her for $48 (Canadian) for the small and $59 (Canadian) for the big one here.

Move Over Barbie and GI Joe – Here is the Edgar Allen Poe Doll

If your kid isn’t into Barbie or GI Joe, maybe the action figure that is for them is one that is a wee bit more literary. The stand is a speaker that amplifies your kid's voice, but the best part about it are the three foot pedals. One provides instant applause, one a hip-hop (more jungle really) beat, and the last has a stand-up comedian's rimshot and cymbal.

Keep in mind that it is a toy, so the overall construction of the thing is pretty flimsy. Consequently if your kid is prone to destroying stuff than you'll need to pay extra attention. But my girls love getting on the mic and singing, making noise and especially introducing one another. And I honestly don't mind a little extra noise around the house - it's when they're being really quiet that I seem to get really scared.

The Electronic Stage Microphone, $27.95 from ImagineToys.com

Learn to Dress a Monkey

If you can dress a monkey, you can probably dress a wiggly toddler. If your toddler can dress a monkey, he'll do the job himself. Meet Little Hands Learn to Dress Monkey, a plush animal pal. He may be stuck in 80s (I think I had a similar outfit in 1982!), but your toddler will love all of his colorful buttons, zippers, snaps, buckles and laces. He is wearing real socks, shoes, a shirt and overalls - all can be removed. Your youngster won't even notice that all of this monkeying around is actually educational. Combining two toys in one, the Yookidoo Kaleido Disk can mount onto the crib rail or stand by itself.

There
are four CDs which easily slot into place and boy...do they play
mesmerizing music! Two of the melodies are lively and the other two are
more serene. Lights surrounding the mirrors produce an exhilarating
light show.

The discovery base also features mirrors, squeakers,
spinners, and clickers. It's a neat toy but the only thing is, you
don't want your kid to keep playing the same CD over and over again
because that can get annoying. So keep out of reach of toddlers and
leave it for the babies.

Kaleido Disk is for ages birth and up and retails for $60.00. It's basically an ink jet printer that prints designs (and even photos) on your nails. If it's reliable, I can't see how Mattel won't have little girls demanding this for Christmas in 2009.

The Barbie B Nails works in conjunction with your computer. The girl picks out a design in the software (there are over 1,000 or she can upload a picture of her own) and then puts her hand inside the machine. There's a little camera inside so she can place her fingernail in just the right place, and then when she presses the button the design gets printed on her nail.

The Barbie B Nails (I'm not sure exactly what the "B" in the name means) is for ages 8 years old and up and should be available in the fall of 2009. No price has been announced.

The Cuteness of Kiki

I love the odd doll. They just sit there and look pretty. This doll, that is an exclusive to A Toy Garden, ain’t just cute but gives birth complete with placenta, and she nurses too. This Waldorfian handmade plush doll comes from Brazil where it is used to teach girls about natural childbirth.

“When it is time, our Birthing Doll can have her cotton undies pulled down and she can give birth to a small cotton/wool baby doll. As the baby is born, it has an umbilial cord attached to a red felt circle symbolic of the placenta. The cord can be unsnapped from the baby's stomach and then put back into momma for safe storage. Baby has a snap on its mouth and can be gently placed (snapped) onto mommy's breasts to nurse. Mommy's breasts each have a snap for secure latching on. Mommy's dress snaps open in the front and can be mostly snapped up for discrete nursing. Baby can be carefully placed back into mommy (feet first) for another birth experience.”

Whether you want to educate you children on the wonders of childbirth or if you’re just a big fan of the process, this doll is for you. My daughter suddenly believes that fairies live among us: here, there and everywhere. The last thing I want to do is plaster her walls and room with fairy memorabilia. But this simple Heart Elfin Door takes a more imaginative and interesting approach to the gateway to fairyland.

This 8” resin door can stick to any neighborhood tree, where fairies tend to hang out of course. The “legend” is that only fairy can open the door, and only at night when little ones are fast asleep. To add a wee bit of ye olde magic to your tree, pick one up here for $12.98.

The Crayon Apron Keeps Them in Line

In my house, there is always a stray crayon here, there, and everywhere. I dream of a day where they all stay in one place (and in one piece). The Crayon Apron has the potential to do just that. This adorable artist apron will neatly hold 24 crayons in the each of the 24 little pockets. Plus the apron is cute too with it’s retro old school style. You can pick one up here for $25.

A Toy Piano?
