The Mitchell Report: Baseball, Dads and Steroids

Posted by Whit Honea

The Mitchell Report was released today.  It is the findings of an investigation by George Mitchell into the steroid use of major league baseball players.  There are lots of names on the list, 77, and many of them are fathers.  That's why you're reading about this on FameCrawler.

I have a problem with the report for a number of reasons, among them it relies almost exclusively on the plea-bargained testimony of just a few men and it was conducted by an ex-Senator, which means the guy is most likely an idiot, who is also part of the Boston Red Sox management team.  Guess how many prominent Red Sox players are mentioned?  None.  I find it hard to believe that those unshaven cowboys in Boston are the only pure of heart players in all of baseball.

What does my opinion mean? Not much, other than the fact that I'm not alone in such thought and that baseball should have considered it.  They've allowed many a loophole for players named, guilty or not, to avoid penalty or scrutiny and have instead provided the opportunity for MLB to get a big black eye.  We shall see how it plays out.

Among the players named: Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte of the New York Yankees, Miguel Tejada of the Houston Astros, Eric Gagne of the Milwaukee Brewers and Paul Lo Duca of the Washington Nationals, Barry Bonds, Kevin Brown, Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield, Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa and the late Ken Caminiti.

Apparently the players were giving an opportunity to explain themselves to Mitchell prior to the release, but only Jason Giambi did so.

This could have huge implications for the game and everyone involved.  I'm guessing Mitchell isn't the only idiot in this post (not counting me).
