Marion Jones Sentenced to Prison

Posted by Whit Honea

Marion Jones has fallen. The one time track superstar pleaded with the judge not to separate her from her children with jail time for her steroid use, but was given the maximum sentence available under her plea bargain.

Judge Kenneth Karas said that he gave her 6-months in jail plus 800 hours of community service to make an example of her to other athletes that choose to use steroids instead of  "hard work, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship."

That's messed up.  Yes, she was wrong.  She is financially ruined.  Her name is tarnished and her legacy in jeopardy.  There is a long list of terrible things that she is now facing due to her choices.  I don't have a problem with her being punished, but I don't see how she is responsible for other athletes.  She was given steroids by the same people that gave them to Jason Giambi and Barry Bonds.  Where is their orange jumpsuit?

These atheles take these drugs knowing the potential harm both to their bodies and to their names.  The fact that Marion Jones has been striped of her medals and her name is forever tarnished seems punishment enough.  Save the jails for the people pushing/selling the drugs.
