Gwyneth Paltrow And Chris Martin To Adopt

Posted by HerBadMother

Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted that she and husband Chris Martin are discussing plans for adoption, and she says that unlike celeb friends like Madonna, who adopt from developing countries, she'd like to adopt a child from Brooklyn.

“We might get one from Brooklyn,” she said.

“No baby is more helpless than another baby. And I’m a New York girl.”

And with that, Gwynnie has officially won me over a bit. Eschewing the flashy, photo-op-rich dash into a war-torn country to rescue a bedraggled child in favour of quietly adopting a needy child at home? That's classy. Because she's right: all abandoned babies are helpless, and need love, not just the ones who come with UN-approved stamps on their foreheads.

(Also? I was won over by Chris Martin recently when I saw his self-mocking appearance on the Ricky Gervais show Extras. He's clearly a big ol' doofus. And if Gwyneth's not as vapidly, veganly pious as I once thought her to be, then hellz - maybe they're really not bad people after all. I don't know that I'd have them over for spinach nuggets and hummus, but still. It's progress.)

I love this. I'm so happy to hear about adoption (celeb or no) in our own country. It seems like sometimes people forget that there are children in need of parents right here in the US.

That's great they want to adopt.  I am confused though why people think being given up for adoption in the USA, where they go from a hospital or healthy foster home to their new family soon after birth, is somehow on par with being left on a street and raised in an orphange in a third world country.  There is no comparison.  They both need famlies but the orphan abandoned in a third world country often needs a family to live and survive. I have seen third world orphanages with no heat, dirt floors, the children sleep on floors, no medicine, few caregivers, no running water.  You would never, ever see that here. The drawback to international adtopion is the child is usually over 6 months old.  She wants to adopt in Brooklyn because they can get a newborn fresh from a chosen birthmothers' womb.  Gwyn has had a miscarriage, she has the Newborn Jones.
