Breastfeeding Promotes Weightloss - Lies! So Says Salma Hayek

Posted by Sassy Smith

Actress and new mom Salma Hayek recently appeared on the Oprah Show and according to her, she believes that breastfeeding does not help with weightloss.

Here's what she said in part about pregnancy, breastfeeding and weightloss:

“Yes, and I’m still working on it. I gained a lot of weight, I had gestational diabetes. The pregnancy was really difficult for me. I thought, as soon as this baby is out, I’m just going to lose the weight super fast, because I’m going to breast feed, and everybody tells you that if you breastfeed it’s going to come out like this, it’s a lie! It’s not true.”

“Except for a couple of exceptions, the only reason people lose weight like that when they’re breastfeeding, it’s because they’re not eating and they’re breastfeeding, and this is not good for the baby. You know how they tell you it takes nine months to get it, nine months to lose it? There are shortcuts, but it’s not good for the baby. So I’m taking my time. I’ve lost a lot, most of the weight, and I’m very proud of it because it’s been really hard work studying what kind of food to eat that’s healthy for me, healthy for the baby. But I’m still losing even if it’s slow, and I’ve been working out… and the rest is going to go when it’s time to go.”

Every woman is different, so I suppose for some, breastfeeding might help in the weightloss department while it might not work for others.  If you're having trouble getting back to your pre-baby figure, try JLo's method.  Ha!

This has been true for me. I weighed 100 pounds before getting pregnant and was up to 150 pounds by the time I gave birth. I've lost 25 pounds but the other 25 just won't come off, and its been over a year.

My experience was the exact opposite of Salma Hayek's! With both my babies, I nursed exclusively and literally could not eat enough while breastfeeding (I'd have episodes of feeling faint and dizzy from over-hunger), and still lost all the baby weight in something like five to six weeks each time. I was eating big, healthy meals, snacks every hour, and supplementing my diet with plenty of ice cream and chocolate! I was totally amazed. I realize I was very, very lucky....but I'm proof positive that every woman's experience is different!

I lost all the weight in six months but honestly I wish some of it stayed.  There was something nice about having curves on my hipless, boobless body.  I'm back to my pre pregnancy wardrobe.  But damn those pants are low and shirts are short!!!

Yeah, my experience has been the same as Shannon's with both my pregnancies. I was actually underweight by the time my firstborn weaned himself at 20 months. However, no one warned me about the 15 lbs of boomerang weight that I re-gained after that. Boo!

I'm in the same boat. I gained about 40 during my pregnancy. My baby is 8 months and I've lost about 15-20. I nurse when I'm with the baby, and pump when I'm at work, and the rest of the weight just isn't coming off. Also, I find that I am constantly hungry and constantly thirsty.

A recent meta-analysis of all the studies that looked at breastfeeding and weight loss found that on average, women who breastfed did not weigh less than women who did not. Of course there will be anecdotes to contradict this but in general there is not real support for this old wives tale. Too bad for me, boo hoo, I had high hopes to getting rid of that 60 lbs I packed on...

i just think its nice that she admits the main way to lose the weight is hard work-you do not just wake up thin as a rail again, esp those last 10!
