Miley Cyrus Issues A Statement About "Nude" Photos

Posted by Sassy Smith

Whoa - those semi-nude, seemingly topless, racy, inappropriate - whatever you want to call them photos of 15-year-old Miley Cyrus has the internets all abuzz.  Miss Miley Cyrus has now issued a statement regarding THESE photos.  Disney has also issued a statement, as well as Vanity Fair regarding the photoshoot.   Read all three after the jump:

From Miley: "I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," she says. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.'"

From Disney: “Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines."

From Vanity Fair: "Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day. Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley," the magazine says.

The photos were shot by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair.  Billy Ray and Tish were reportedly at the photoshoot during the time that the pics were taken - this according to Vanity Fair as told to The New York Times.

However a source told PEOPLE that Miley's parents left before that shot was taken.  Her grandmother and teacher were on set - "Miley's grandmother and her teacher were there when she shot it.  Annie convinced them it was going to be artistic.  Her parents are mortified.  They know this is a learning moment for Miley.  The photo suggests that she is [naked], but she is not.  She is covered by a sheet, and beneath the sheet she is clothed.  Originally, she was in a flesh-colored tank top but was asked to remove it."

The Hannah Montana teen had told Bruce Handy, the journalist interviewing her, that she loved the photo.  "Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought it was really cool.  That's what she wanted me to do, and you can't say no to Annie.  I think it's really artsy.  It wasn't in a skanky way." (I bet this was BEFORE her parents let her know that they were not happy about this situation).

The whole point of the photo was for Miley to appear to be NAKED under that sheet (regardless if she was or not) and I'm sorry, but that's wrong to portray a 15-year-old that way.

I think this might be a wake up call for Billy Ray and Tish.

Who leaves their 15 yr old daughter alone when only covered by a sheet?  Since when is childhood nudity for the purpose of selling magazines artistic? Give me a break.  Do you really leave the decision up to a 15 yr old. Of course she liked the photo -- SHE'S 15!  Wake up parents is right.

I've been thinking a lot about this today.  I guess this is one situation in which one person's "art" is another person's kiddie porn.

As a parenting expert, parents are asking me how to handle the situation with their tweens.  While everyone makes mistakes, let's be honest. Tween role models aren’t allowed the same amount of space for slip-ups.

Parents and tweens are watching their icon's every move. That's the problem with being American's tween idol. They’re under 24/7 surveillance.  They’re overexposed through TV, magazines, internet, texting, and every other media outlet that tells all.  Mistakes in Hollywood are broadcast in ever direction within moments and publicists and spokes people are left to figure out what to do next.

Regardless of whose fault it is, it happened, and parents are looking for answers.  I definitely sense that people are beginning to expect the worst when it comes to teen/tween role models. I mean, people are just sick of it-- Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton.  Miley is their girl-next-door...and parents are praying that their girl next door is not names Lolita.

Please!! She dresses provocatively every single time she gets onstage! How on earth is this worse? VF published a shot of Lindsay Lohan naked, why did anyone, including her parents think that the same sexy young starlet look wasn't going to happen here? At any point she, or her parents, could have said, "Actually, my daughter will not be posing in a SHEET, or looking like a tramp. Pick another outfit please!" But they didn't. And now she's a victim? Hardly. She's just regretful, which is a whole different thing.
