Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair Photos: Annie Leibovitz Speaks

Photographer Annie Leibovitz is speaking out about the controversial Miley Cyrus photographs she shot for Vanity Fair.  The photo causing the biggest stir shows the Disney star topless and wrapped in a bedsheet.

“I'm sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted," Leibovitz said in a statement. "Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together, and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it.

"The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful.”

C'mon, Annie - I'm no prude when it comes to nudity.  I'm even a big fan of yours.  But the bedsheet, the come-hither look - this picture is clearly exploitative.  You've got three very young daughters of your own, and I would have hoped, that as a mother, you would have used more discretion when photographing a 15-year-old girl for a national magazine.  One wonders how you would feel if this was your daughter, photographed by someone other than yourself.

Please. Every bit of this "scandal" is a planned PR stunt. Disney, Vanity Fair, Annie Liebowitz, and the Cyrus family are not new to the publicity dance. They all knew exactly what they were doing, the reaction it would provoke, and how they would respond, before any of it happened.

Miley is 15, so she's only got another couple of years before the "perky virgin" image wears thin, so her team is starting to position her as an older performer. Just watch--this is only the beginning of a long, meticulously planned "coming out" process.

Yes, I'm completely sick of Miley already.  She is so overexposed (in more ways than one). I usually love Annie's work but this was a misstep.

I wholeheartedly agree with chyna823. Nothing that comes out of LA is a surprise to anyone involved.....

No one has ever accused parent Billy Ray of being a rocket scientist. The most predicatable facet is that money and fame, in combination are all too blinding and corruptive.

As a dad, I'm disappointed in Miley Cyrus and her family. It's not about her bare back, that's harmless. But in the picture she's in bed looking sexy (even as if she just had sex). She's only 15. What do I tell my 16 year old daughter - that Miley's doing it right, and my daughter is taking things too slowly with boys? Miley has made $1 billion off kids, and now she's thumbing her nose at them, saying "I'm not a kid like you anymore."

If you don't mind, I blogged about this photo:

I think the photo itself was taken from an artistic standpoint, but it should have stayed in the drawer until she was older. Vanity Fair should not have published it.

Brooke Shields didn't have a TV for kids to totally worship her when she did the Calvin Klein ads. It was risque', but she didn't have the same rabid fan base to have to explain this to.

the picture is harmless when taken in the artistic way it was meant.  Miley is a down to earth young lady with a good wholsome family.  She knows her fans and her responsibility to them.  It may have been a mistake, but I think folks talking bad about her is worse. She is a talanted young lady and the world should not go all tabloid on her.
