Has the whole Vanity Fair debacle pushed Disney to take extreme measures? Could they possibly be considering shoving their number one tween superstar to the side, and replacing her with a more wholesome young role model? Is there still more mileage that we can wring out of this whole Miley Cyrus thing? Apparently, yes.
Parents across North America have, apparently, been flooding Disney with complaints about the escapades of Miss Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, who this past week trumped her own hand at scandal-mongering (was it just last week that she was flashing her bra on MySpace?) by posing in a provocative series of pictures in Vanity Fair. And Disney, apparently, is listening. Not only are they putting Miley on a sort of hiatus, they're also said to be considering downgrading their promotion and support of her in favor of another tween up-and-comer (and Miley look-alike), Selena Gomez.
Marc Malkin at E! Online reports: 'I’m told Disney executives are so worried about Cyrus’ recent controversies that, more than ever, they want to make Gomez an even bigger star.
The 15-year-old Gomez now stars in the Disney Channel hit Wizards of Waverly Place, but last year she appeared on two episodes of Hannah Montana as Mikayla, one of Hannah’s pop star rivals.
“Selena
sings and acts and is really young,” a source reports. “She is going to
be the next Miley Cyrus. [Disney executives] really want this.”'
If they can get her to keep her top on, then this might be - in theory - a good plan. But according to all the commenters at this post, top-removal and MySpace exhibitionism are as normal as orthodontics and acne among today's teen set, so odds are that Gomez is just as likely to show her boobies at some point as Miley was.
Maybe it's time to go back to animation as a mainstay, Disney, if you're trying to keep a handle on the tween market? Belle doesn't take her top off unless the animators get drunk and slip her crayon roofies. Something to think about, maybe.
