Two Year Old Suri - Too Old For A Bottle?

Posted by Sassy Smith

We've seen a lot of photos of Suri Cruise lately - and in just about every outing, she's got a bottle (with milk presumably).  The celebrity toddler just turned two - is that too old to be having a bottle?

There have been Famecrawler commenters on recent Suri posts, that think two is too old for a bottle, while others think there's nothing wrong with it, and actually have kids that are older drinking from a bottle.  I recently did a post about Leah Remini's nearly four-year-old daughter who was having 6+ bottles per night (she's since been weaned) and was at her wits end as to how to put a stop to it.  The "when to stop the bottle" seems to be a touchy subject for some.

Dr. Susan Sorenson wrote this about the subject:

“The longer babies hang onto their bottles, the more attached they get to them.” The big issue with a toddler still drinking from a bottle is the risk of tooth decay, or “bottle rot.”

What do you think?  Is two past the age of having a bottle?  Are you a parent struggling with this very issue?

People breastfeed longer than 2, so I have no issues with the bottle.  Better formula than Mountain Dew.

My kids didn't bottle feed, but I see nothing wrong with it as long as it's not causing dental issues (i.e. "bottle rot"). Bedtime bottles with anything other than water can be a bit tricky, but small children have a strong urge to suck and I think they should be allowed to meet that need for as long as they have it.

Wanna hear something really funny?  That's not regular milk or formula.  Apparently, Scientologists believe that babies and toddlers should not be fed breastmilk or formula, but a mix of "barley water, corn syrup, and cow's milk."  Here's what L. Ron Hubbard says:

"This formula is most like human milk. I picked it up in Roman days and have used it since -- 15 ounces of barley water, 10 ounces of homogenized milk, 3 ounces Karo syrup (As the Romans had honey, 2 ounces of honey may be used instead of corn syrup, if desired.)"

P.S.

My dear Whit, breastfeeding a toddler and a toddler with a bottle are two different issues. Although, I do see your point about Mountain Dew - sadly I have actually seen parents do this.  Normal term breastfeeding (ie child led weaning) actually is beneficial for dental development, as well as the development of oro-facial muscles.  Also, the breast doesn't drip into the mouth like a bottle, etc, etc.

Breastmilk wont rot your teeth like high carb barley and freaking corn syrup.  A bottle past weaning age pushes the front teeth back and will lead to longer times in braces.  If you can eat three meals and two snacks you dont need a bottle.  Bottles are not breasts.  Totally differnet modes of feeding.  The crap she dirnks is the same as putting mountain dew in a bottle really.  It is full of corn syrup too.

My daughter is several days older than Suri and quit the bottle at around nine months so I have been perplexed by Little Miss Cruise's bottle-toting.  One thing that comes to mind is that poor Suri has so much public attention that maybe the bottle is her comfort object.  Maybe she pitches a horrible fit if she doesn't have it in some situations.  Weird about the Scientology formula though... that is very interesting and strange (in my humble opinion.)

Wait arent you not supposed to give babies honey before age 1? L Ron Hubbard seems to think its okay. Actually wait, yeah hes the same one that said women have to be silent during CHILDBIRTH right?

Im telling you this bottle thing in older kids is a scientology thing. both katie cruise and leah remini are members of the church of scientology.

I think if I were an innocent toddler and had cameras in my face every time I stepped outside, I would probably cling to whatever made me feel a little more confident and comfortable. Wouldn't you?

I don't think 2 is necessarily too old for a bottle (and it may be a comfort object for her, as some have said), but the main reason I tried to get my kids on sippy cups by that age was just so they were able to drink from straws if we were out and they needed a drink. Of course, Katie probably has a full-time nanny/sherpa whose job it is to maintain and carry a full-stocked diaper bag with enough bottles and diapers to allow for every contingency.

Who cares!  She can take a bottle with her on her first day of high school if she is so inclined.  I don't understand why people think what anyone else, especially celebrities, does with their own kid is any of their business.

Good point Sherry and probably the most important; mind your own business.
