Charlotte Church is on a mission - the 22-year-old who gave birth to daugther Ruby nearly 8 months ago - wants new, young moms to know that although breastfeeding can come with some difficult challenges, "breast is best."
The singer has started a compaign to get younger moms - those under 20 - to breastfeed their babies, hoping that her own story of struggles with breastfeeding will inspire, and she wants to show other moms that they can be overcome and mother and baby can benefit from the experience. Charlotte herself developed an infection, saying, “We got through it. There are trials and tribulations but in general it is so much easier than formula feeding.”
Statistics in the UK show that only 4 out of 10 young moms breastfeed (under 20 years of age) and that nearly 75% of older moms (in their 30s) breastfeed. Church wants to change that.
Charlotte said, at the launch of the Welsh Assembly Government campaign on Monday, "I wanted to breastfeed because I wanted to do my best for my baby.
“Giving birth was much more scary – after you have given birth, breastfeeding is a walk in the park.
“It just felt like the completely natural and right thing to do. It is such a bonding experience with your baby.”
Charlotte said her partner Gavin Henson was very supportive of her breastfeeding. "As soon as I started breastfeeding I could definitely feel everything getting back into shape much quicker."
Hopefully she finds great success in her campaign!
