In the name of the Lord I pray against the powers of darkness that would seek to conquer this family - blame, guilt, recrimination, despair - and I pray for the Holy Spirit to flood your lives with love, compassion, unity, and grace in this hour of pain.

Smitty wrote the lyrics to the song below for a friend who lost their child several days after his birth.  I hope that you find encouragement in it, even a hint of joy through the tears as you consider our Lord's great and precious promises.  He will never leave you nor forsake you - He loves you; you are His child, adopted into His love even while you hated and reviled Him.  God's love is so great that it has reached down to those who did not love Him, and He saved them.  Your beautiful daughter is now dancing before her Father, seeing clearly what we still see so dimly.  At this young age she is understanding things we can only imagine - such as the perfect, unconditional love of God Himself.  My heart pours out to Father on your behalf!  May you find comfort in Father alone, in the remembrance of what was and what is to come.  I pray for peace for your family and for your son - that his heart would be protected from Satan's darts of condemnation and fear.  I pray that the press and reporters would not be opressive, that they would be kind and honest in their press releases, and that your family would be granted the needed grace to respond appropriately to their questions.  And I ask God to give your family time to be together, with eachother in private and before God.  I wish I could reach through my computer and hug you, not as a "fan" but as a fellow Christian and friend who is walking this road, facing different struggles, but looking to Father for His provision.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Chapman family - this is such a deep tragedy, it's hard to take in.  Recently went through losing a young loved one in my family and the wounds are deep.  I pray especially for Maria's brother to receive peace during this dark time. God holds each tear in his hand.  

Chi, you're right....but Steven should have known not to play around with God. As any member of the Church of Christ knows, it's an abomination to praise the Lord using anything other than your voice.

This story made me sick to my stomache.  I also have a 5 year old adopted for China.  Every other week there is a story of a truck or SUV (same thing) running over a small child. It's called the Bye Bye Syndrome, the kid runs out to say goodbye or hello and gets run over because you cannot see them since the chassis is so high.  They eat gas and kill small kids. Great famiy vehicle people.

if i had to make a bet between who has done more work in china for people, between you and steven curtis chapman, i would bet that you would be floating down a river too dan.  When your musical gifts are as great as someone like SCC and you use that gift to connect people to God, you do what you can with that gift, just as SCC has done, and even moreso, he has used his status to advance the kingdom of God both in spiritual growth in the body of Christ and social Justice in the Asian Adoption awareness.  Yeah, real self centered.  beware to judge Dan, but i'm sure you are perfect and you are over in Burma right now doing relief work...

My heart has hurt all day thinking about what this family is experienceing. It hurt for all those lost in the recent earthquake and cyclone across the globe. Hurting for one doesn't take awy the hurt for th other.

I am a member of the Church of Christ, like Dan. I, however, listen to all sorts of Christian music. I think the gift SCC has is given by God, and the messages that he sings are there to bring the love and joy of God to our hearts.

Instruments aren't an abomination. You are adding to the Bible, just like we try not to do. The Bible is simply silent about instruments. The Bible is also silent about song books and song leaders, but we have both of those. To judge on something so petty is sad, espcially on this blog about the loss of a small child. (no matter the color or income level)

We are very sorry for this loss. I am sure that God will use all this for His glory and honor. We will be praying for the Chapman's family. Remember you are not alone we are all with you.

i hope you all know (since you are able to type whatever name on here you want) that all of the above slander is this troll dan.  the last post i made was commenting on SCC's gift of music and his action in the arena of adoption and social justice in China.

I wanted to say something about this tragic situation, but first have to address Dan.  I'm really shocked at the ignorance of your remarks, which are borderline heretical as far as I'm concerned.  When you mock someone like SCC who has clearly been gifted by God, you invite discipline.  I strongly encourage you to get your facts straight before you pass judgment, because ignorance of the "law" is not an excuse for misusing it.  Steven Curtis Chapman has dedicated his life to glorifying God and serving orphans, what higher calling is there?.

I cannot believe what i am reading!!!   It turns my stomach to think that someone could actually be that cruel. You obviously have some sort of bitterness issues Dan. The funny thing is, you can say anything you want, no matter how harsh, the same loving God that now holds Maria Chapman would still be willing to hold you and love you too!!!  We all need to pray for people like this. The prince of this world has these people deceived. I cannot even tell you how God has used SCC music to encourage, speak to, and  comfort me and my husband.       We are praying for the entire Chapman family.      Chapman's- You cannot imagine how deeply we feel your pain. We are carrying you to jesus on a daily basis! Please know we love you and care about your family.

My heart breaks.  I too have a daughter adopted from China.  As a church of Christ member, we do not use musical instruments during worship.  But that has nothing to do with this horrible tragedy.  An inexperienced driver and a child that didn't know better were both in the wrong place at the wrong time.  That's all it is.  God did not allow this nor did he make it happen.

I only wish that the Chapman family might find peace and comfort soon.  What they have endured, no family should ever have to.

I can't begin to express my sorrow for the death of sweet little Maria, her poor brother who was also involved in the accident, and the entire Chapman family.  When I was called to Christ and heard Him speaking to me it was through music that I was first touched.  Specifically, Steven Curtis Chapman was one of the first musicians to open my heart to Christ to let him in.  I've seen him in concerts several times and have felt God's presence within the arenas where the concerts were held.  He and his family set such amazing examples of what it means to be true Christians.  May the strength they give others be given back to each of them as they mourn the loss of precious little Maria.  

I heard of this tragedy from a friend tonight, got to reading the blog. I cannot believe that anyone calling her/him/self Christian would hurt a family man at this time of  unbearable sadness and guilt over a tragic accident. Some of you need to read the JESUS of the Gospel, not spew denominational idiocy that is un-biblical, un-Christian because it is so unloving. Read 1 Cor 13 for starters: Love does not rejoice in and the rest. JESUS is the Judge not us. As to the Church of Christ banning musical insturments: read Acts, see that the young Church went to the Temple to pray, then to their homes for teaching and fellowship and the "breaking of bread," the Communion Service. Then see that the Old Testament psalms required musical instruments,so the Apostles and Disciples took part. See  other references to MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS  which were part of temple worship and Jewish life. Such bigoted ignorance. I am praying for this family's tragedy and for the end of ignorance and bigotry within the Body of Christ. How boring to pray and sing with no musical instruments which God allowed us to make with His GIFT to give Him praise?

            You wrote, "How boring to pray and sing with no musical instruments."  Churches of Christ do not use them because it is not written in the New Testament to do so.  And, it is not boring.  As I believe that musical instruments sometimes takes away from the beauty of a song.  We are to worship God, not entertain ourselves.  If it is wrong not to use instruments to worship, God will judge.

One more thing.  I am a fan of Steven Curtis Chapman and appreciate his music.  I like most modern Gospel music.  As a church of Christ member, we only use our voices for music during Sunday Worship and Wednesday evening services.  What we do at home isn't the same as when we gather with the church.  Hope that helps explain things from the c of C a bit better.  If I am wrong, I only ask God's forgiveness.

This seems like a real stretch! Some of the most sublime music that exists features musical instruments--Beethoven, Bach, Schumann, Wagner, Faure, etc. etc.

This just boggles my mind--never heard of it before. Even ANGELS are depicted playing harps! Very curious.

GOD HAS USED STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN AND HIS FAMILY TO LEAD OTHERS TO HIM...Jesus may not have had musical instruments to use in his time, but if He did, I'm sure he would use them!  It's called, "progress."  He didn't have the internet to use in His time either, but if He did, I'm sure he would use them!  Does that mean that you are committing a sin Dan, by using the internet, or a car, or watching T.V., or using running water or flushing a toilet, etc, etc, etc.?  What's gonna happen when Gabriel blows the trumpet(a musical instrument), are you not going to pay attention?  Those were very calous comments made, Dan.  This family is hurting and your comments just add to their pain.

I am definately praying for the whole Chapman family.  I believe the brother who was involved is the one who is graduating from High School this year.

His songs "I Can Do All Things" and "Fingerprints of God"  have both helped me get through these last 4 years with the medical issues I have had to deal with for my 4 year old daughter. Her medical issues have helped me grow closer to God.  She is doing great now and the worst is over.  

this is a terrible time for that family and they will need everyone's thoughts and prayers, also that poor boy needs as much help as possible right now,and to you dan,you are evidently someone who is not in the word of the lord as you should be because the bible states that even the rocks will cry out to him and sing his praise and god would never punish anyone for in which manner they praise him, you are a person who needs more understanding. i will be praying for this family and their loss of their beautiful child and for the healing of their son, body and soul.
