Britney Spears - Video "Proof" That She Can't Sing

Posted by Sassy Smith

There's no doubt that Britney Spears was a great performer at the height of her pop career - she was certainly marketed well.  And while she was never touted at the best dancer or even the best singer, she, no question, had talent.  However, there's a video that's been making the rounds "proving" that Britney is a horrible singer and couldn't hit a note if her life depended on it.  Or is it fake?

Video after the jump!

I've listened to it a few times - it does sound like Britney and while it's been a known fact (supposedly) that she often (or all the time) lip synced during her live performances, it should come as no surprise that she'd pretty much have to lip sync - or at least not have her live voice put out through the microphone, instead, have pre-recorded music or dubbing over her actual, live vocals - because seriously, if you're gyrating around like the Energizer Bunny, of course you'd be out of breath!  Of course you'd probably sound like crap or couldn't hit a note - so is it fair to criticize Spears for wanting to put on the best show she could and give her fans their money's worth?

Do you think it's her voice on the video?  And if so, is it a big deal that she sounds crappy (of course concert-goers heard only the "awesome singer" Britney) on her microphone feed that only her sound crew would hear?  And seriously, I'm guessing Beyonce and Janet Jackson get a little vocal help during their very active, live concerts.  Just sayin'.

Maybe we should cut Brit a break?  I know I couldn't dance around in a full-fledged workout and sing in key - sure, I can't sing in key standing still either, but that's besides the point.

Watch and listen for yourself:

Call me a purist, but if I'm going to see a live concert, then I want the artist to be able to sing well LIVE.  I think lip-synching during a concert without informing the public is basically fraud.  Who wants to pay $100+ a ticket for that?  These singers get paid spectacularly well, and it does bug me when they don't have the talent to back it up.

I personally like my performers to be able to sing live as well - I'm just asking the questions for the sake of argument.  I've seen many, many concerts ('cause I'm old) and I like it when the artist/band sounds much like they do on their cd with no "special effects."

Even Britney's recorded songs are overly worked miracles of technology.  I think she is an ok singer (Mickey Mouse club) but by no means great.  You would never ask her to sing the national anthem!
