Sarah Palin is a Liar?

Posted by Karl Erikson

If you watched Sarah Palin's speech at the Republican National Convention, you weren't alone. Over 40 million people saw that speech. Maybe a handful of those people were tuning in to see if she'd talk about her pregnant daughter, or get the chance to see her future son-in-law, Levi.

Regardless, it's time to talk about that speech in a little more detail. Because, folks, Sarah Palin didn't just stretch the truth.

Sarah Palin lied.

There's a story on ABC News' web site that goes through some of Palin's quotes and then does a little honest fact-checking against those statements. Here's some of what she said, compared with the facts.

LIE #1: "Obama is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word 'victory' except when he's talking about his own campaign."

FACT #1: On July 15, Obama used the word "victory" twice in reference to Iraq. He said, "I want Iraqis to take responsibility for their own future, and to reach the political accommodation necessary for long-term stability. That's victory. That's success. That's what's best for Iraq."

A week later in Germany on July 23, Obama used the word "victory" three times describing Allied successes during World War II.

LIE #2: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform -- not even in the state senate."

FACT #2: Of course it depends on how you view the word "major." Obama worked with Republicans to pass legislation that would expand efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction. As a state senator in Illinois, he sponsored two bills, one that studied racial profiling by police and another that made it mandatory to record interrogations in death penalty cases.

LIE #3: "I fought to bring about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history. And when that deal was struck, we began a nearly $40 billion natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence. That pipeline, when the last section is laid and its valves are opened, will lead America one step farther away from dependence on dangerous foreign powers that do not have our interests at heart."

FACT #3: The big project? Yeah, not yet approved by the Feds. The proposed pipeline would ship natural gas from Alaska to homes and businesses across the U.S. The Alaskan legislature, with Palin's help, just agreed to pay Canadian energy company TransCanada $500 million to build the pipeline.

LIE #4:
"And I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending: nearly half a billion dollars in vetoes. I suspended the state fuel tax, and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks, but no thanks,' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

FACT #4:
As mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin hired a lobbyist to get earmarks from Congress. Wasilla, with a population of 10,000, got $27 million in federal money, about as much as Boise, Idaho, with a population of 200,000. The money went to sewage improvements and roads connecting the town to a local ski resort. With the "Bridge to Nowhere," Palin supported it at first. It would have used federal funds to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to Gravina Island, population 50. It was after the proposed plan was ridiculed that she pulled out.

So there you have it. It's always interesting to hear the other side of the stories that politicians tell. Sarah Palin may have given a good speech, but it wasn't exactly accurate.

But isn't that par for the course with politics? Hard to believe a word any of them say. Thank God this shit will be over in a couple of months. The campaigning, at least. We still have to put up with whoever gets elected.

Compare and contrast the two sides and their lies.  Guiliani and Huckabee are the big winners with outright whoppers.  Cathe Freidrich, ooops, I mean, Sarah McPalin, had a lot of whoppers but the speech was written for someone else and she just read it.

Karl, thanks for posting this.

Palin is a liar. She is the archtype of the hypocrytical Christian right wing...they ue the rules of the gospel when it suits them for power and to throw stones and judge others.

The lies make me physically ill.

McCain and Palin are shredding the morale of Americans who are already so depressed they can hardly watch any of it much less care about it.

This is destructive to our democratic process as it produces hatred and apathy.

Sarah is a fake said:

I live in Alaska and hunt, fish etc. Unlike Sarah, I also pilot a supercub and commercially fish on a boat (Sarah does hers on the beach) and yea, my kids played hockey and I drove them all over the place--but unlike Sarah, I play too--you see, many Alaskan women don't just attend the games, we sign up in leagues and play ourselves.  I'm not a unique Alaskan woman--fairly typical.  Sarah is a fake.  She is trying to create an imagine, but there is no substance to it.  She did not pass ethics reform in Alaska.  The minority Democrats have been fighting to get it passed for years and when three of Sarah's fellow Republicans were convicted and sent to jail for taking kick-backs from the oil companies, the majority Republicans were too embarrassed to continue fighting the ethics legislation, so they finally allowed the Democrats (who were totally responsible for crafting it) and Sarah had no choice but to sign the legislation.  She is such a Liar!  I think the issues of her children should be studied, not the children themselves.  I wonder how well she has focused on her most important role, that of a mother, when her oldest vandalizes school buses and is given the choice to go to juvey or sign up for the Army.  I would be mortified if any of my kids vandalized anything--especially school property!  I wouldn't be "proud" if my teenage daughter got pregnant either.  Fortunately, I raised my children to be responsible for their actions and my daughter came to me and asked me to put her on birth control when she decided to become sexually active.  A much better choice than the one poor little Bristol was faced with.  Sarah is not a good Christian woman--she is a pawn who is being used to solidify an unsophisticated set of right wing voters.  She may be effective, but she is a fake.

Dear "Sarah is a Fake" Alaskan mother.  Bravo to you for your honesty about Sarah Palin.  I could see immediately that she was a fake and a liar.  You hit the nail on the head in all of your remarks about her.  I hope that the American people start hearing the truth about her and "real" soon.  I don't think that she will be very effective as a VP and I pray that the honest people of this country finally realize the truth about her and about MCain.  They will destroy this country and everything we stand for and they will do only those things that will benefit themselve and those like themselves  I feel so sorry for her children.  She is driven by her ego and if she is an example of a Christian then I wouldn't want to declare that I am a Christian.  If she knew the true teachings of Jesus Christ she would not lie the way she does and she would not treat others like she does, in thought, word or deed. When I see her making speeches, I do not see a Christ spirit in her, rather I see an angry woman who strikes out at others with a sharp, lying tongue.  She uses speaks words of being a Christian but I don't see the fruits.  Do you?

Wow...  nice detective work, Mr. Karl.

I'd love to see a caption on that last pic of Levi and Bristol:

Levi: "Last time you looked at me like that, I got you knocked up."

Bristol: "Oh c'mon... that's not true.  I just want you to smile for the press."

Lie#1: She said "an entire speech" not "a sound bite".  Seems you went and looked for sound bites.  And it's true - He *CAN* write an entire speech about Iraq and not use the word "victory".  She didn't say "He's unable to utter the word 'victory.'"

Lie#2: I see no major law there.  "worked with" does not equal "authored major law" and the State Senate stuff seems more joke-worthy than worthy.  I mean, really - "studied"?  "record interrogations"?  That's major?

Lie#3: where's the lie?  "when the deal was struck, we began...".  She didn't say "we're done and the Feds approved it".  also, $500mil vs 40Bil (that's, um, let's see... 80 times as much?) seems like a good deal to me.

Lie#4: again, where's the lie?  She said what she did, and you're stating items that don't contradict it.  I see you used the words "would have" - are you predicting a lie?
