Forget Sarah Palin the Governor. Forget Sarah Palin, the running mate of John McCain. Forget Sarah Palin's political views. Forget the gossip about Sarah Palin. This is about Sarah Palin, as a mom, saying goodbye to her child.
Sarah Palin's 19-year-old son Track, is being sent to Iraq and the mom of five gave a speech in front of her son's unit, Army's 1st Stryker Brigade, Delta company, in Fairbanks, Alaska, last week.
She said, in part, "As you depart us, your parents, your friends and family, if you allow for a few tears and (allow us) to hold you closer before you're gone."
Palin spoke with PEOPLE in June and said she was proud of Track but that he, "didn't ask our permission to sign up."
"He's young, strong and smart and this is a good positive step for him. He gave up hockey to do this and I'm very supportive. I believe in the cause, and hope and pray we have a worthy cause."
Todd Palin, Track's father, who is an Army vet, said that his one regret was that his son didn't seek out other branches of the service before enlisting. However, his son has his full support. "He's looking forward to it. He's an independent young man."
The head of Track's unit, Army Col. Burt Thompson, said that Track does not receive any preferential treatment, despite his mother being a public figure. Track's unit is heading to Diyala, the fourth most violent of Iraq's provinces. The 19-year-old will operate an armored eight-wheeled, 19-ton "Stryker" and will be a bodyguard for brigade leaders.
I can't even imagine my child being there and we wish the boy a safe return!
