Clay Aiken and Jaymes Foster's infant son Parker was admitted to the hospital and required surgery...
... at just one month old. Aiken, 29, who recently admitted he was gay, has also opened up about being a first time father. He and best friend Jaymes Foster welcomed their son Parker on August 8, and the baby had had some health issues almost from the get go.
Clay tells PEOPLE:
"He had been gassy for weeks and then he started throwing up. Jaymes and I were trying to be calm, rational parents, so we didn't call the doctors too much, but it just got to a point where he was vomiting everything. He was starting to get dehydrated."
One-month-old Parker was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis - an intestinal condition that complicates baby's digestion - and required surgery to correct the problem.
It was at that point, that it hit home for Clay - that he was actually a dad.
"Parker had been in one day already when I got really panicky." Clay woke at 2 a.m. and headed to the hospital. "I was a little worried, like 'I don't think they're going to let me in the hospital at 2 or 3 in the morning.' Then I thought, 'Wait a second, I'm the father! Of course they'll let me in.' It was the first moment when I thought, 'I'm actually this child's father!'"
So how is baby Parker doing now? Clay says, "He's fine, healthy and doing well!"
