Comedian Sandra Bernhard was scheduled to headline an annual benefit for Rosie's Place, a women's shelter in Boston. Then, less than a month ago at her one-woman show in Washington, Bernhard made a "joke" about Governor Sarah Palin, saying that Palin would be "gang-raped by my big black brothers" if she ever came to NYC.
Isn't that hysterical? I've never been a fan of Bernhard's comedy...she just grates on me, worse than Dane Cook. But that's pretty far over the line, even for a bitch (with a capital "C") like Bernhard. And the officials at Rosie's Place agree. They've cut Bernhard from the benefit.
P.R. director for the shelter, Leemarie Mosca, said that "we don't think violence against women is a laughing matter. Right now, our main focus is on our event and making sure the event is a success. For us, that means not including Sandra Bernhard at this time."
Trying to defend her caustic remark, Bernhard said on her web site that the gang-rape joke was part of a larger piece from her show about "racism, freedom, women's right, and the extreme views of Governor Sarah Palin - a woman who doesn't believe that other women should have the right to choose. I certainly wish Gov. Palin no harm - I'd just like her to explain to me how she can hold such outrageous views, and then go back to Alaska."
Yeah, extreme and outrageous views. Certainly none of those coming out of Sandra's mouth.
