Joe Biden Chokes Up on Matters of Family: Video

Posted by Whit Honea

During the SNL skit that was the Vice Presidential Debate last night there was one moment that jumped out as pure truth and genuine sincerity.  I know, we're not used to such things in politics, but it was there and it was touching.

Some background: Joe Biden's first wife and his young daughter were killed in a tragic accident in the early 70's.  His two surviving children were in very serious condition.  Biden was literally sworn into his seat in the U.S. Senate while standing at the hospital bedside of his injured sons.  Regardless of your politics that is undisputed and utter sadness.

Last night Biden touched, albeit briefly, on that time in his life and for just a split second America saw something better than politics and finger-pointing.  They saw a man's love of his family and the shadows of his loss.

He never works on Dec. 18th, the anniversary of the accident.  His daughter was just a baby and his only daughter.  For while it seemed as if both sons might die, too.  I loved the way Palin, the egg donor to 4 or 5 kids, did not even acknowledge his statement about his family.  Just started blathering on about talking points.  Then she said his second wife, Jill, was "getting points in heaven" for being a teacher for 30 years.  Nevermind he already has 1 wife already in Heaven!  What a doofus!

Why did he even bring it up like he did?  Devistating, yes.  Relevant, no.  She answered the question asked of them, he wanted us to feel sorry for him.

A-- WTF are you talking about?! He brought it up to prove a point that he is not disconnected from every day problems that average Americans face. Quaylin made a comment about struggling hard times with two jobs and no insurance and being a mom and Biden merely responded that being a man didn't make him immune to understanding those same challenges. His comments were about struggles with income, balancing work/home life, healthcare issues and single parenthood. He is very down to earth and his statements had nothing to do with wanting anyone to feel sorry for him.
