Jon & Kate Plus 8: Kate Gosselin Talks Motherhood

Posted by Sassy Smith

TLC's Jon & Kate Plus 8 reality star Kate Gosselin is mom to 8 kids - 7 1/2 year old twins, and 4 year old  sextuplets - and the 33 year old mom sat down with Cookie magazine and dished on marriage, how she copes with so many kids and some of her favorite things.

Photos after the jump!

I can't even imagine having eight children.  I need a nap now.  Here's the interview:

On what her children do to make her laugh: “I laugh at them all the time. They are just so cute that I can’t help it!”

On her favorite family ritual: “I feel most happy when we are getting ready for church on Sunday mornings. It is a ritual that works and goes smoothly—for the most part—and I love when our routines are down to a science.”

On her most frazzled mommy moment: “One time I got a call from the [twins’] school that Mady didn’t feel well and needed to come home. I was on a conference call at that time, and Jon was at work. Since I hadn’t had a chance to get a shower in a few days, maybe, I took a five-second shower and got dressed—while wet! I quickly called a neighbor to sit here at home while the little kids were napping, and I went to get Mady. She was okay but wanted to come home, so I brought her home and jumped right into making dinner. While I was at the kitchen sink, I looked down to see Leah vomiting all over the rug next to my feet. So while my pot was on the stove boiling away, I scooped her up and proceeded to bathe her in the kitchen sink! I couldn’t leave the room with a hot pot and six 2-year-olds! I sent two of the kids for a towel and two other kids for a new outfit. I had to laugh because I had to stir dinner and leave Leah splashing in the sink while I cooked! The other kids formed a crowd around me, thinking I had finally lost my mind—because I was cooking and their sister was splashing! In the end, I was able to clean up the vomit and finish dinner (after a good hand scrubbing, of course), and to everyone’s surprise, dinner was not burnt. It was delicious!”

On the issue she and Jon disagree most about: “How to make the punishment fit the crime.”

On her parenting role - good cop or bad cop: “Neither of us are bad cops, but if you are asking who is firmest, that would be me.”

On what she wakes up in the middle of the night thinking about: “How much I miss my kids and wish I had endless hours with each one.”

On what she wishes she had done before having children: “Slept more!”

On what a typical Saturday morning is like in the house: “We all sleep late—or at least play quietly, right, Alexis? And then we have Mommy’s homemade pancakes or waffles around 9:30. After we eat, I clean up and we play and laze around. That is, if our busy schedule allows for that luxury.”

On her guiltiest pleasure: “I treat myself to a spa treatment every month—but wish it could be weekly!”

On her ideal getaway: “Hawaii. With the kids, without the kids … I don’t care. It’s paradise!”

On her favorite clothing item: “Anything summer wardrobe and anything that makes me look thin.”

On her current reading material: “The Bible and a book on how to be the best mommy I can be—but I can’t remember the title, sorry.”

On if she prefers chocolate or cheese: “Yes, please!”

On if she cooks at home or eats takeout: “Oh, definitely at home.”

On if she coddles the tots or lets them cry it out: “Depends on who it is, what time of day, and what the cry sounds like.”

I definitely need a nap now.  Jon and Kate's kids are: Cara, Mady, Aiden,, Joel, Leah, Alexis, Collin, and Hannah.

What a complete and total crock!!  Kate and Jon don't even have jobs anymore.  Instead their income comes from allowing strangers to film their children on the potty and airing it on national tv for pedophiles and peers to see.

Kate and Jon have been caught in several lies, and have pushed away all close friends and family members.  The children are showing signs of stress from the "family job" but that doesn't matter, because Kate needs her spa days and designer hand bags.

They have nannies, housekeepers, a chef, and people to run their errands.  So what do they do then?  Oh, they go on speaking engagements 3 days out of every week and tell normal everyday people that they're financially strapped.

What a total scam.

Yeah, that's a mom I aspire to be like.

I think there's some fairly legitimate criticism about the G's. I don't think they are anywhere near as cash strapped as they make out (in fact, they do very well b/c of the show) and they probably have way more help these days than they did in the early days of the show, but I imagine it's pretty hard to look a gift horse in the mouth when you've got 8 kids to feed.

I don't blame them, but I'd respect them more if they were honest about how much help they get and how they are doing okay financially. Don't need the financial details, but they always skirt around the issue and say they only do the show to record family memories which is a bit of stretch.

Celebrity? So any crackpot that gets some reality (not!) tv gig is now a celeb.  I'd rather see more episodes with the conjoined twins or the steroid abuser with the exploding arms then this dysfunctional disaster of a family.

For the record, one supposed "insider" that started a lot of these rumors about jon and kate on the infamous hateblog has recently been exposed as a fraud who doesn't even know Jon and Kate. This person has also been linked to several other naysaying "insiders" on the same blog. Most of the hate being spewed forth by the people who hate kate are based on these "insider" stories of volunteers been mistreated by Kate. Someone made these stories up! Yeah, maybe jodi and kate aren't friends anymore but that happens. Some of you are making a federal case against Kate because she chooses not to be involved with Jodi, when really her personal relationships are none of your business. You accuse kate of all of these "untruths" while in the same breath spreading rumors that you have absolutely no facts to back up. You are taking the word of strangers on the internet and spreading them as fact just because the things they say make Kate look like and monster and thats what you want. Truth and fact have nothing to do with it.

I love the show and my kids and I watch it all the time. I think that the children are very well behaved and John and Kate do the best that they can do with 8 children. Who care if you let people film your children and make money. And this is for mommaT what would you do with 8 kids? Don't you think that you would pray for someone to come and film your family for extra money? Oh yeah you would!!! So shut up and tend to your own, and if you don't like the show DON'T WATCH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey MamaT, your comments are ridiculous! With 8 kids so close in age, how else can they give their kids a good life. If it weren't for the show, they would both have to work fulltime+ just to get by. How is that better for the kids? They get to spend so  much more time with them this way. I have 4 kids from 17yrs down to 14 months, and believe me, their kids are completely normal! They don't seem stressed to me. They are going to have opportunities they wouldn't have otherwise. Walk a mile in Kates' shoes and see see about your aspirations!

Seriously if you have issues with the show then DON'T WATCH it!!! Turn off your flipping tv or change the channel! Hopefully with this show they can provide things for their kids that they couldn't before. I would LOVE to be able to stay home with my kids! If this is they way they can do this than more power to them! And who cares about their personal relationships, if they choose not to talk to family back off! I have an aunt I have never spoken too and I turned out just fine!

I absolutely love this family and their show. I have written to Kate several times in the past and she has always found time to email me back. I have also seen them at one of their speaking engagments. They are a wonderful couple and family and I love that they are Christians and display this in their everyday life. We need more families like this in America.

Poor Johann! I feel for you! In those short few phrases, it is obvious that you did not have a loving family to support and nourish you.

Luckily, in the 21st centry we do have Choice. You can choose to be a parent (like J&K) or not (like you). Either choice is okay.

With choice, there is responsibility. If you choose to be a parent, you should do everything in your power to support your kids (financially, spiritually, educationally, etc). I suspect that the reason why the show is so popular is because it is a model of what a family could aspire to be. For example, have fun outings, play together, laugh together, fight together, learn together, have faith together etc, etc.

Its not perfect. We are not in heaven and anyone who touts themselves as perfect is a fraud.

I love watching the show.  So what if they get help what is wrong with that.  If you were in their shoes wouldnt you need help. They do not have to justify their money or their friends. Its better to not get close to people as u can see people are evil, noisy, stupid, and talk behind your back. Dont like it dont watch it. HATERS dont be hating because you have to wake up every morning and go to work and they dont. HAHA

I was hoping that people would understand there is a bigger issue here then just the personal"choice"that Karma is saying,we(everyone)has to live on this planet,we as humans try to curb our primal urges for the good of the whole, having as many children as you can(that they can not afford) is not something to be proud off this type of thinking(I'am giving them the credit that they did think) it is this this type of thinking (or lack off)that causes us in U.S. to be paying the bills for so many children in so many ways, from school to Doctor to a roof over thier head I feel if you can pay for it and if you don,t care about the impact you @ your's have on the rest of the world or the type of world your children and grandchildren will have so be it, but don't ask the rest of us to pay for your poor judgement, its bad enough we have to pay with the problems over population causes, there should be a test to have kids your IQ should be larger then your shoe size.

I am concerned for the well being of the children.  Celebrity and lack of privacy are two issues these children are being forced to deal with beginning at a very young age. They will have to deal with it the rest of their lives.  Neither Jon or Kate know what it is like to be a child celebrity and to live with the constant "where are they now" type pressure.  I believe if they had, they would not choose this media centered life style for their children. I wish them the best, but fear in the long run the long term consequences of the decisions they are making today for their family may not be all positive. Time will ultimatly tell us if they have made the right decision.  At one point I enjoyed the show.  I no longer do as I feel the children are being exploited..intentional or not, by their parents, the production company, and ultimalty the viewers.

Jenine, yes, Kate does think about her kids all the time and that was not cheesy....just real Kate!

MamaT and all the others who are so critical-

Please, take your hate elsewhere.  Kate is a genuine and kind person. I know her and she only thinks about those kids 24/7, 7 days a week.

She and Jon have followed God's path for them and their children. Nannies? No.  But, there are  people who they trust to WATCH their children when they are at a speaking engagement, etc.  Like you people don't have babysitters??

Johann--you're just uneducated. Wow, trying to decipher your rambling post...are you saying that J&K chose to have all these kids? Where have you been?  Fertility treatments are a chance. There was a one in 3 million chance for sextuplets.  Educate yourself before you assume what people's private lives are like.

The show is the way God has provided for the Gosselins. The freebies and all that you people bitch about, that's all a part of the package.  If you have a beef about that...take it to TLC, that's their sponsors. And, beleive me, Kate and Jon are both appreciative of everything everyday.  What you have not seen on the show is just how much they've given back. They are supporters of St. Jude Hospital and other children's pediatric hospitals.  They are teaching the kids on empathy, sympathy, and kindness.

Come to think of it, there are a lot of things you don't see on tv.  Remember that, and remember that the Gosselins are at the mercy of the editors of TLC.

I in deed think that people arerealy uneducated and very arragont. People are always going to want what they dont have and what YOU (Jon and KAte) do. Thats LOVE, a FAMILY, a routine and free stuff! WHO CARES what they get for FREE! Why cant anyone just be happy for another family? Is that REALLY how selfish we have become? And i am sure the ids have doctors and if the doctors SENSED anything wrong with the children being on t.v. and in the public eye, something would be done about it. Kate wouldnt put her children in harms way. Kate is a RN so she could return to work and make money but she has her prioritys straight. FAMILY FIRST! maybe all of you people who are so angry at the fact of this show should try spending more time with your family. Family is EVERYTHING. Think about back in the 1800s or even just a few decades ago 1960s, family was family no mater how poor you were and kate has found an enjoyable way to spend time with her family and it jus so happens to be on t.v. I have personally learned a lot from watching this show. routines can be done. Religion CAN be done. LEARN something people. Nobody is concerned with how you see another person. learn that... you have to love yourself before you can love someone else. I think a lot of people need to learn to love themselve and not be so selfish.

I like the show because the kids are so cute, though one of the twins is way to whine at times. I think Kate is just too stressed for being a stay-at-home mother. I am a stay at home mom with 3 kids, plus one more on the way. I can see the fact why Kate is losing her mind constantly. I don't know if she has a maid. But cleaning, raising kids, cookings, running errands, and the so-on lists are on my & her shoulder daily so we deserves to loss our mind at times. :)

I don't have any jealousy issues with the Gosselins but I find it puzzling that these guys have made enough money to buy a 1.3 million dollar home at a time when others cannot afford to keep their homes.  I don't mind them being famous or celebrities, but enough already !  Let's move on to other needy families.  No one can say with any certainty that the children will not have any problems in the coming years regarding their early celebrity and having moments filmed that IMO should have been kept private for dignity's sake.  Why not err on the side of caution and stop filming the children ?
