When we think of celebrities, we often think that their lives are perfect (or close to it), but that's certainly not always the case. Jennifer Lopez opens up for the first time, about suffering a nervous breakdown seven years ago. "I was like - I don't want to move. I don't want to talk. I don't want to do anything. I had a nervous breakdown."
Jennifer spoke with The Daily Beast:
The 39-year-old actress and singer was filming the movie Enough, and it was just before she married her second husband, Cris Judd, when she "froze," and didn't want to do anything.
"There were no signs leading up to it. You really don't know what's happening at first. I was going, what's going on? It's funny what tricks your mind plays on you. I just didn't want people to think I was falling apart
"I don't get nervous. I don't get depressed. Blah, blah, blah…There was a time when I was very overworked and I was doing music and movies and so many things. I was suffering from a lack of sleep. And I did have a kind of nervous breakdown. I froze up on a set. Well, not on a set, but in my trailer. I was like, ‘I don’t want to move. I don’t want to talk. I don’t want to do anything.’ It was on that movie Enough [in 2002]. Yeah. I did. I had a nervous breakdown."
Lopez blames stress and overwork for her mental exhaustion. She refused medication and chose to rest until she felt better. She'd never been to a shrink, said she's, "not a shrinky person."
However, the new mom of twins didn't experience PPD after their birth, although people had "prepped" her for it.
"People kept prepping me for it, but it didn't happen. At the tenth day after giving birth all that chemical stuff did peak - that hormone thing - and I did cry a lot that day because I was having so much trouble moving (after her caesarean section)."
JLo also talks about Scientology - her father David has been involved in the religion for over 20 years. She previously denied being a member of the religion but said she was "bothered by people's negative attitude towards it.
"I just wish that people wouldn't judge it without knowing what it is." She said she wouldn't be opposed to her children attending a Scientology school.
What about her "diva" image?
Lopez says, "Once you have a lot of success you become a target in many ways. I just think the whole diva thing is a misreprestation of who I am. I worked really hard. I kept my focus on the right things. And still even with that they find stuff to pick on."
