While there was much debate about whether President-elect Barack Obama and wife Michelle would send their daughters to private or public school, there's no wondering now. It was confirmed on Friday that Malia, 10, and Sasha,7, will attend Sidwell Friends School in Washington. It's a whooping $29,000 a year in tuition fees.
The tuition fee doesn't even cover the cost of textbooks or other services from the school. For twenty-nine grand, I'd want the school to do my laundry, but hey, that's just me. You can see what they charge for other services here.
The school was established in 1883 and many other famous children have attended (or are attending), including:
Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon's daughter, Al Gore's son, Albert Gore III and currently attending are Vice-President elect Joe Biden's granddaughters. Malia Obama wanted to attend Sidwell because of her friendship with Biden's grandkids.
Other schools were in consideration according to Mrs. Obama's spokeswoman, but the Obamas felt that Sidwell best suited their children's needs. Sidwell is known for its rigorous standards and for educating children from some of the most prominent and wealthiest families in Washington.
Malia and Sasha will attend classes on separate campuses in different cities. Malia will be in fifth grade in northwest Washington and Sasha, in second grade will be in Bethesda, Md.
I hope they settle in nicely - it's always hard starting a new school!
