The holidays are upon us - ALL the holidays...Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas, Festivus. 'Tis the season and all that jazz. And lucky 4-1/2-year-old Roman Walker Zelman has a lot to be thankful for. He gets the best of both worlds...and tons more presents. Mom Debra Messing, says that Roman knows "he's Jewish but doesn't know that Santa doesn't come for Jewish people." She "hasn't broken it to him yet," so in her house they celebrate both Christmas AND Hanukkah.
"We have the menorah and we light the candles and so for him, he just knows that it's Hanukkah because there's fire...He also loves the prayer, and he pretends like he knows how to say the prayer (babbles jibberish). And he's so proud of himself."
Roman "wants everything," of course, but as the wise philosopher Steven Wright says, "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?" Roman will, however, be getting eight presents for Hanukkah. And when he goes to visit Grandma on Christmas, Debra says, "That's where he gets the much better deal, the whole present explosion under the tree."
One of Roman's favorite Christmas things is to watch a dancing water display and a neon Santa Claus at the popular Grove, an outdoor mall in Los Angeles. "It goes across slowly on this wire," says Debra, "and you watch it, and then it stops, and then it backs up, and then it goes again. And you're thinking, 'Okay how long can this entertain this child?' Three hours later, it's like okay, 'We have to go!' He just loves it."
Debra has a new movie coming out next Friday. It's called "Nothing Like the Holidays" and has a pretty amazing cast. John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez, and Alfred Molina for starters. I think Debra is the only non-Hispanic person in the cast. It's about 3 Puerto Rican siblings who go home for the holidays.
