Nicole Kidman apparently made a huge faux pas when she decided to play the didgeridoo - a long wooden wind instrument of the Aborigines of northern Australia - on the "Wetten, Dass..?" show in Germany. An Aboriginal cultural leader has warned Kidman she may never bear more children because of it. Nicole and co-star Hugh Jackman were on the show to promote their film Australia.
Aboriginal language teacher, Richard Green told Sydney Morning Herald: "People are going to see Nicole playing it and think it's all right."
He added, "It bastardises our culture. I will guarantee she has no more children. It is not meant to be played by women as it will make them barren."
Apparently Nicole "blew feebly" into the didgeridoo while on the TV show, and her actions have angered and insulted many.
Alan Madden, a cultural officer at Sydney's Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, said that the actress should have known better since she just finished filming her latest epic in the Australian outback.
He told the newspaper, "I presume she doesn't know, otherwise she wouldn't be playing it... Baz should know something about it, after working with those traditional fellas on the film."
I mean no disrespect - but I'm guessing Nicole had no idea that what she was doing was insulting or taboo or could lead her to not be able to bear more children as per the Aboriginal people. Maybe she'll issue an apology? Yikes.
