Britney Spears went through a rough couple of years, which, among other bad things happening, cost her custody of her two sons. However, her dad Jamie stepped in, and got her the help she needed and her life has been looking up. A conservatorship was established by the courts, with Jamie Spears in charge and now, that conservatorship has been made permanent.
On Monday, January 5, court papers were filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, which puts Jamie Spears and attorney Andrew Wallet, in permanent control over Britney's finances and her father is in permanent control of her personal affairs.
The documents, in part, states, that Spears "is substantially unable to manage... her financial resources or to resist fraud or undue influence" and "is unable properly to provide for her personal needs for phsycial health, food, clothing, or shelter."
Her father has "the power to restrict and limit visitors by any means."
Samuel Ingham, a court-appointed attorney in Britney's interest in the conservatorship said, "I've met several times with [Britney] and she requested that I not object to the permanent conservatorship."
Commissioner Reva Goetz said it was "necessary and appropriate for the complexity of financial and business entities and her being susceptible to undue influence."
This permanent conservatorship prevents any periodic reviews and extentions but Britney is able to regain control of her life if she chooses and her doctors concur that she is capable of handling her affairs.
However, the permanent conservatorship also means that Spears is not likely to regain custody of her sons. She will, of course, continue to have access and her time with Sean Preston and Jayden James may be extended over time. Should the conservatorship be severed, Brit could try to regain custody.
I can see both sides of this - based on Britney's past behavior, it's clear she's, certainly at times, not capable of managing her life. Obviously it doesn't help when vultures swoop in and try to use her for whatever they can get. On the other hand, it would be frustrating as a 27-year-old woman to have your father controlling just about every aspect of your life.
So much for Britney getting hitched and pregnant any time soon.
