Talk about becoming an instant celebrity! Move over Gosselin family, I see a reality TV show in the works. A Bellflower, CA woman has given birth to octuplets - that's eight babies - but they were expecting only seven. The eighth baby was a total surprise. Do you suppose panic set in? Nah, if you can handle seven, what's one more?
The babies - six boys and two girls - were born at Kaiser Permanete hospital in Bellflower, CA, January 26, with the first baby being delivered by c-section at 10:43 a.m. and the eighth baby at 10:48 a.m. A total of 46 doctors helped in the delivery room.
Dr. Karen Maples said they were shocked when it became apparent that there was an eighth child. "My eyes got to be the size of saucers. We just went on and delivered the babies."
Dr. Harold Henry said the delivery "went off without a hitch." He added, "The babies are all doing well and the mom is also doing well. There were no complications from the surgery to the best of my knowledge."
As of this morning, all 8 babies are breathing on their own. Kaiser spokeswoman Myra Suarez told the AP, "They are all doing the best they can."
The mom, who has not been identified, said, "It was exciting, a little anxious. But we were prepared." Mom will be released from hospital in a week and the babies are expected to stay for at least two months. The babies weighed between 1 pound and 15 ounces to 3 pounds and four ounces.
In 1998, the first live-born octuplets were born in Houston to Nkem Chukwu and lyke Louis Udobi, but one baby died a week later. The surviving children - girls Ebuka, Gorom, Chidi, Chima and Echerem, and brothers Ikem and Jioke - are happy, healthy 10-year-olds in the fourth grade.
Chukwu said to the new parents of octuplets, "Just enjoy it. It's a blessing, truly a blessing. We'll keep praying for them."
Congrats to the family, and we wish all the best to the new babies!
