John Updike, one of America's greatest contemporary writers and father of four, died this morning.
The Pulitzer-prize winning writer and chronicler of sex and malaise in postwar America died of lung cancer, according to his representatives. He was 76 years old.
From Nicholas Latimer, director of publicity for Knopf:
"It is
with great sadness that I report that John Updike died this morning at
the age of 76, after a battle with lung cancer. He was one of our
greatest writers, and he will be sorely missed."
